NFL Updates: Recent Developments, League News, Off-Season Schedule and More
May 18, 2014
Ever since the 2014 NFL Draft last weekend, we’ve been mired in an unexpectedly busy stretch of news. That should continue this week as we creep closer and closer to the opener of the new season. That said, let’s check out some of the headlines and stories from around the league.
Andre Johnson, WR, Houston Texans: One of the big stories from the NFL last week concerned the comments from veteran Texans receiver Andre Johnson. Let’s take a look at the possible scenarios this storyline could follow before it’s all finished.
During an interview last week, Johnson expressed doubts about whether or not he still considered Houston to be the place for him, suggesting their playoff futility (just twice in his tenure) to be one of the major reasons for his displeasure.
Johnson’s not getting any younger, and as of right now he’s looking at yet another rebuilding project in Houston that doesn’t even have a definite quarterback to help steer the ship.
Despite his displeasure, moving Johnson would likely prove to be difficult. He’d cost $11.96 million in dead money for a move, but that doesn’t rule out a trade this off-season. Johnson is still a game-breaking talent, and there’s sure to be some interest out there. We’ll keep you posted.

Arrelious Benn, WR, Free Agent: Many people saw this one coming, and the Eagles made it official yesterday. Philadelphia announced the release of four-year vet Arrelious Benn yesterday, which is just the latest setback in a frustrating NFL campaign.
Benn was coming off an ACL tear last summer and missed all of 2013. In addition to that injury, he’s also suffered a right MCL sprain, a concussion and a shoulder injury.
There’s no word yet as to who might potentially be interested in Benn, but he’ll be facing an uphill battle to get back on the field in a meaningful capacity.
Roddy White, WR, Atlanta Falcons: Here’s a sad story out of Charleston. Tyrone Moore, Jr., who is the half-brother of the Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White, was shot to death in the early-morning hours yesterday. The incident occurred outside a nightclub in James Island, South Carolina Moore was 21 years old.
Authorities are still trying to piece the incident together, including searching for suspects and motive.
Needless to say, this experience will weigh heavily on White’s mind as he prepares for the 2014 campaign with the Falcons.
