NFL Updates: Johnson, Lions, Off-Season Schedule and More
May 23, 2014
It’s been a steady week of NFL news so far, even though we’re still quite a ways away from the official opener. Let’s keep the headlines rolling by taking our daily look around the league and checking out some of the noteworthy players and storylines out there right now. Here’s the latest.
Andre Johnson, WR, Houston Texans: As the days go by, this Johnson situation down in Houston seems to get more and more interesting. The team will begin their voluntary OTAs next week, and the star WR has gone on record saying that he’s not planning on being there. Adding fuel to that fire is a new report that says he’s not going to be taking part in the mandatory minicamp either.
Johnson has been a hot topic of conversation ever since his comments last week wondering if Houston was still the place for him. The 32-year old doesn’t seem to keen on the prospect of participating in another rebuilding year with the Texans and has lamented their playoff absences during his tenure there.
Johnson is still under contract through 2016, and most people doubt a deal will get done because of all the dead money ($11.96 million) involved in a trade situation. We’ll see what happens, though.

Tony Romo, QB, Dallas Cowboys: It’s been a while since we’ve talked about Romo, so let’s check in on his progress and see how he’s doing. His latest update has him “getting close” to being able to practice with his teammates again, which would indicate he’s progressing fairly well following his back surgery late last year.
Romo has been taking his recovery process one step at a time and hasn’t tried to rush anything. Over the past couple of weeks, he’s been able to do a little bit of on-field training with coaches and Cowboys staff and will probably take another step forward in this coming week.
There have been a lot of question marks surrounding Romo this off-season, most concerning his ability to bounce back so quickly after major surgery. We probably won’t know much of anything until the season officially begins, though.
Lions Notes: We’ve got a few tidbits on the Lions this morning, so let’s head to Detroit to see what’s happening there.
Reggie Bush, fresh off his first year with the Lions, says the team’s new offense is “exactly the same” as New Orleans used during his time with the Saints. That’s good news to any Lions fans hoping for an offensive explosion in this coming season.
Fellow running back Joique Bell is dealing with a “nagging” knee injury that first kept him out of practice on Wednesday, but he says it’s no big deal. Bell dismissed the condition as something he had all last season and brushed his practice absence off as precautionary.
Elsewhere, uber-WR Calvin Johnson reportedly looked “rusty” during minicamp practice this week, a comment fueled by some uncharacteristic dropped passes. He still looked like the Megatron of old in speed and route-running, though, so it looks like there’s nothing to be concerned with here.
Week 1 Schedule: Now that the schedules have been released, we can start looking forward to the on-field action as we warm up for the 2014 campaign. Here’s a look at the first week of the season, which begins September 4.
