NFL Updates: Falcons, Fantasy, Off-Season Schedule and More
June 14, 2014
We’ve finally reached the weekend, and the NFL news is coming in strong. We’re going to be getting a lot of new information over the next couple of weeks, so get ready for some extended coverage of your favorite teams. That said, let’s take our daily look around the league and check out some of the notable players out there.
Falcons on “Hard Knocks”: With the announcement this week that the Falcons would be featured on HBO’s NFL training camp documentary “Hard Knocks,” fans of the series and of the team are wondering exactly what we’ll get when the cameras start rolling.
Foremost in the spotlight will be the team’s attempts to regain relevance in the NFC after a disastrous 2013 campaign. The coaching staff (and some of the players) are under the gun and must log a successful year in order to stay off the proverbial hot seats.
We’re also looking forward to get close-up views of Falcons stars Steven Jackson, Roddy White, Julio Jones and Matt Ryan.
We’ll have to wait a while to see what’s in store in Atlanta, though. The show doesn’t premiere until August.

Derek Carr, QB, Oakland Raiders: In a storyline that is simply too juicy to go away, everyone is continuing to talk about hotshot rookie Derek Carr and his potential to wrestle away the starting QB job from Matt Schaub, who technically hasn’t even taken a snap for his new team just yet.
Head coach Dennis Allen has alluded to a possible shakeup, saying the depth chart was written “in pencil,” and OC Greg Olson has praised Carr’s accuracy, quickness and smarts.
Even though Carr entered the off-season period as the No. 3 QB on the Raiders roster, he’s starting to surpass Matt McGloin for the No. 2 job. Could the No. 1 slot be next? It’s surely possible, but we’d imagine the Raiders will at least give Schaub a regular-season look first. If he struggles, look out.
Fantasy Corner: This week, we’ve been checking out each position in the upcoming fantasy draft, and now it’s time we reviewed the early indications on a few sleepers. We’ll start at quarterback, which is a deep slot overall, but does seem to have a few gems hiding just beyond the top layer.
Tom Brady will once again go in the 6-9 range among quarterbacks, and provides some nice value to those looking for a starter. Even though he’s another year older, he always seems to be a solid contributor on what always seems to be a solid offense.
Robert Griffin III comes in around the No. 10 range or so, with some nice bounce-back capabilities surrounding him. He’s got a full year of healing under his belt and should take a step forward again.
Cam Newton doesn’t really have much of a receiving corps, and is also an injury risk, but sits nicely in the No. 15 range.
Philip Rivers is also another name to watch, as he can be picked up at a discount and will put up some stellar games here and there. Look for him in the high-teens.
