NFL Updates: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
June 22, 2014
Last week’s minicamps gave us all sorts of new information on the upcoming NFL season. As we wait on training camp next month, we’ve got plenty of things to talk about in our journey toward the 2014 campaign. With that, let’s take our daily look around the league and see who’s making news out there.
Sam Bradford, QB, St. Louis Rams: We haven’t checked in on Bradford for a little while, so let’s see how he’s coming along. He made a few comments following last week’s minicamp that indicate he’s going into the year healthy.
Bradford talked of a little fatigue during practice, but attributed that to getting back to a normal workout schedule. He said he’s still got to build up some endurance in his legs, which will be a priority following last year’s torn ACL and consequent surgery.
This will be a huge year for both Bradford and the Rams’ current coaching staff. If the young QB doesn’t display some major signs of improvement, and if the team isn’t able to make any headway in what should be a ridiculously competitive division, we could see changes coming.

Steelers Backfield Outlook: Heading into the 2014 campaign, an intriguing storyline in Pittsburgh is the Steelers’ backfield. The team boasts a very potent one-two combination of second-year man Le’Veon Bell and new arrival LeGarrette Blount, and by the most recent indications we may see a far more even carry-split than previously thought.
Pittsburgh is leaning toward more of a no-huddle type approach this year, which will test the endurance of both backs. With no time to sub in and out, both Bell and Blount will have to be versatile in their games, be it rushing, blocking or receiving.
If this up-tempo approach ends up working, we could see an offensive resurgence in Pittsburgh. Couple that with some much-needed improvements on an aging defense, and we could see the Steelers back in the mix of the AFC North this season.
Derek Carr, QB, Oakland Raiders: This has been an ongoing storyline in the Raiders’ off-season, and it’s looking like it’s just beginning to heat up. For weeks, we’ve been hearing of rookie QB Derek Carr’s quick adjustment to the NFL level in practices and his impressive performances during workouts.
All that talk has created a tangible point now, as late last week it was announced that Carr had leapfrogged fellow QB Matt McGloin to take over the Raiders’ No. 2 slot on the depth chart.
Oakland coach Dennis Allen has indicated that the team is trying to speed Carr’s progress along, and it looks like it’s working. The rookie is already earning the respect of the veterans, and remains a legitimate threat to take over Matt Schaub’s not-so-firm grasp on the No. 1 QB position.
Week 1 Schedule: Now that the schedules have been released, we can start looking forward to the on-field action as we warm up for the 2014 campaign. Here’s a look at the first week of the season, which begins September 4.
