NFL Updates: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More

Last week’s minicamps gave us NFL fans a fresh round of news and outlooks to chew on as we head toward next month’s training camp period. It won’t be too much longer now before our Sundays are consumed with football yet again, so with that in mind let’s take our daily look around the league and see who’s making news out there.

Cordarrelle Patterson, WR, Minnesota Vikings: Last season, we got a mere glimpse of what the dynamic young Cordarrelle Patterson was capable of doing. This year, we just might see the whole package if the Vikings’ plans work out.
With new coach Mike Zimmer and new offensive coordinator Norv Turner at the helm, Patterson will reportedly be a “showcase” and it sounds like the team is prepping to utilize him in a lot of situations this season.
Coupled with the recent news that Adrian Peterson would be catching more balls out of the backfield, this makes it sound like we’ll have a high-flying offensive show in Minnesota this season. Patterson certainly has the goods to contribute to that. He posted six touchdowns in his last five games in 2013.

Justin Blackmon, WR, Jacksonville Jaguars: What’s up with Blackmon? It doesn’t appear there’s a clear answer to that question, as the team recently said they haven’t heard much from the troubled receiver since he was suspended indefinitely for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.
According to reports, Blackmon is currently staying around Oklahoma City and isn’t calling too much attention to himself.
Meanwhile, the Jaguars seem like they’re prepared to move on without him, and don’t expect him to be back at all in the 2014 season. This saga is far from over, but Jacksonville has lessened the sting of Blackmon’s absence by picking up a pair of receivers in the second round of the draft this year.

Giants TE Situation: One of the pressing questions facing the Giants as they head toward training camp is who will be the team’s No. 1 go-to guy at the tight end position. According to reports, assumed No. 1 Adrien Robinson hasn’t quite separated himself from the pack this off-season, which might lead to the team going for more of a committee-style approach at the position.
Along with Robinson, the team also could rely on Larry Donnell, who is an athletic young player who’s shown some flashes of ability. A little further down the line, Daniel Fells, Xavier Grimble and Kellen Davis are all on the roster at the TE spot right now and any of them could end up competing for a minimal playing-time role this season.
The situation appears pretty fluid, but we’ll presumably get more answers when training camp gets here.
