NFL Updates: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
July 8, 2014
The NFL training camp season is getting closer and closer, and with it comes plenty of fresh news from around the league. That said, let’s take our daily look around the NFL and see who’s making headlines out there right now. Here’s the latest.
Rob Gronkowski, TE, New England Patriots: The Patriots’ official website posted some encouraging information yesterday concerning superstar TE Rob Gronkowski. The site reported that the team expects him to be ready to go for Week 1, which should alleviate the concerns of many a New England fan.
Gronkowski has had some major difficulties with injuries these past few seasons, and he’s missed almost as many games as he’s played over the last couple of years. There’s still no word as far as whether or not his knee injury will be stable enough to allow him to participate in training camp, but the news that he’s expected to be 100 percent at the start of the year bodes well for the Patriots.

Alfred Blue, RB, Houston Texans: Here’s an interesting tidbit out of Houston. Sources close to the team have been keeping a close watch on rookie Alfred Blue this off-season, and word is that he could make a significant push for the No. 2 RB job behind Arian Foster.
Houston signed Andre Brown for the purposes of spelling Foster this coming year (now that Ben Tate is gone), and it was widely assumed that the hierarchy in the backfield was already set. This new report says Blue has an edge when it comes to youth and lack of wear-and-tear, though Brown still has a leg-up on experience. If Foster were to go down with an injury this season (which is a very real possibility), the team would likely use a combination of Blue and Brown in his place.
Tony Romo, QB, Dallas Cowboys: It’s been a while since we’ve checked in on Romo down in Dallas, so let’s see how he’s coming along. Good news for Cowboys fans: He’s expected to be 100 percent for the beginning of training camp this month.
Romo is coming off of back surgery this past year, but is reportedly in better shape than he was dealing with another back injury. That should help when it comes to his early-season performance.
Also of note, Dallas center Travis Frederick will be trying to help out Romo this season by calling the middle linebacker position and setting the protections pre-snap. If Frederick can do that, it’ll take some responsibility away from Romo so he can worry about other things, like coverages and audibles.
Week 1 Schedule: Now that the schedules have been released, we can start looking forward to the on-field action as we warm up for the 2014 campaign. Here’s a look at the first week of the season, which begins September 4.
