NFL Updates: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More

July 23, 2014

See the Latest Odds

There will be a host of NFL players arriving at their respective training camps in the coming hours, which will give us an even brighter glimpse toward the 2014 football season. While we’re waiting for those first reports to start rolling in, let’s take our daily look around the league and check out some of the headlines.

Bryce Brown, RB, Buffalo Bills: We’ve checked in on Brown and the Bills backfield a few times this season already, and they’re making news yet again. Brown, specifically, has garnered his fair share of attention in the opening days of camp, showing his speed burst and shredding the defense in practice.
Atop the Bills’ depth chart at RB are C.J. Spiller--who will be the team’s No. 1 guy--and Fred Jackson, who will serve in the change-of-pace/situational role. If Brown keeps impressing the coaching staff the way he has been, however, we may see a large role for him in the regular season.

Browns QB Latest: We got some fresh information on the Cleveland Browns’ QB battle this week, and the news is good for impatient fans.
Browns coach Mike Pettine announced Monday that the team hadn’t yet chosen a starter for Week 1 of the regular season, but that they’d be making that decision by Week 3 of the preseason. Pettine also said that a decision could possibly come sooner than that, but August 23 (the date of their third preseason game) is apparently the cutoff.
Today, we’ll start getting a closer look at how the teams split first-team reps between starting QB candidates Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel--the coaching staff was set to have a meeting on that very subject yesterday. As of right now, it would appear that Hoyer is the clear front-runner for the No. 1 job, but anything could happen between now and then.

Johnson Latest: Early this week, there have been quite a few rumblings about disgruntled veteran Texans receiver Andre Johnson. On Monday, he was spotted at the team’s facility, leading to rampant speculation that he and the team had found some common ground.
Johnson was reportedly at the facility to begin learning the team’s new offense, which is a very good sign that he intends to show up to training camp. The team’s first session is on Saturday.
Johnson has been upset with the direction in which the Texans are heading, and he displayed his displeasure by skipping Houston’s mandatory minicamp and voluntary OTA sessions. There were rumors that he wanted to be traded as well, so maybe the two sides have made peace.
