NFL Updates: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
July 24, 2014
We’ve got a fresh set of training camp sessions starting up today, which will give us even more information about the upcoming NFL campaign. With that in mind, let’s take our daily look at some of the headlines out there and see who’s making news around the league. Here’s the latest.
Pat Bowlen Latest: The Broncos dropped a bombshell yesterday when it was announced that team owner Pat Bowlen would be resigning control due to his battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
As Bowlen focuses on his own health, Broncos president Joe Ellis will step in and assume his duties.
Looking toward the future, the 70-year-old Bowlen won’t be selling the team. The family hopes that one of his children (he has seven) will eventually take the reins. Bowlen bought the Broncos in 1984, saving them from bankruptcy. The team won the Super Bowl in both 1997 and 1998.

Babin Deal: Well, it looks like the New York Jets just got a little more potent on the pass rush. Early yesterday, word broke that DE Jason Babin had agreed to a two-year deal with Gang Green and will add another veteran presence on the line.
Babin was cut not once but twice this off-season by the Jacksonville Jaguars, even though he registered a solid 7.5-sack campaign in 2013. The Jags are trying to get younger, though, and a cut makes sense for them.
That’s good news for the Jets, who can definitely make use of him in their situational pass-rushing schemes.
Jamaal Charles, RB, Kansas City Chiefs: Yesterday, we had a very interesting situation developing in Kansas City, and it could have had quite an effect on the upcoming season. Yesterday, word broke that Chiefs uber-RB Jamaal Charles would not be reporting to training camp until he got a new contract. Things got worked out rather quickly, though.
He does have some semblance of a point: After signing a six-year, $27.97 million contract in 2010, Charles was owed just $3.65 million in this upcoming year (after his raise, he'll get $8.3 million now). That’s extremely underpaid for how much he contributes to the Chiefs’ offense.
In 2013, Charles posted a whopping 1,980 yards from scrimmage (good enough for second in the league) with 19 touchdowns to his credit.
Long story short: The team signed him to a two-year extension yesterday, reportedly featuring over $18 million in new money. It wasn’t much of a holdout, after all, and it’s the best thing for both sides.
