Football season is finally here, and it begins with the 2014 Hall of Fame game in a matchup between the New York Giants and Buffalo Bills.
The Buffalo Bills hope that they can take the next step in the right direction with a ton of young talent on the roster. With quarterback EJ Manuel expected to take that next step, along with C.J. Spiller and a wide receiver tandem of Robert Woods and Sammy Watkins, the Bills offense is looking pretty solid on paper. Of course, the Bills did finish 28th in the league in passing yards last season, so talent on paper doesn’t exactly translate to the field. Defensively the Bills also have talent with Marcell Dareus and Mario Williams holding down the fort on the front line, but they have to figure out how to stop the run if things are going to improve. The Bills ranked 28th in the league against the run last season.

The Giants are coming off a very disappointing season last year with a 7-9 record, but do still have many of their key pieces returning. Eli Manning and Victor Cruz continue to hold down the offense, which also improved with the addition of wide receiver Odell Beckham. It’s the Giants running game, which ranked 29th in the league last season, that has to improve if this season is going to be better. Defensively, the Giants can have one of the top pass defenses in the league with a secondary made up of Prince Amukamara, Antrel Rolle and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. No more excuses, the pieces are in place for the Giants to compete for a NFC East title.
The Bills are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games on fieldturf. The Bills are 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings, while the road team is 3-0-1 ATS in their last 4 meetings.
It’s always tough to predict preseason games, especially the first one. I usually side with the team that has the deeper group of quarterbacks and there’s no question it’s the Buffalo Bills in this match. Manuel has promise as a starter and Thaddeus Lewis wasn’t shabby in a backup/starter role last season.
Give me the Bills to win and cover the small chalk.
