NFL Updates: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
August 3, 2014
The first full week of NFL training camps has officially closed, and now we’re moving on to the preseason activities. It won’t be too much longer before we’re knee-deep in the NFL regular season, so with that in mind let’s take our daily look around the league at some of the noteworthy players and happenings out there right now.
Abraham Update: Let’s head down to Arizona to check out the situation with John Abraham and see what’s happening there. Late last week, we got some fresh information on his status, as Cardinals coach Bruce Arians told reporters that his sack-leading linebacker would be coming into camp by Wednesday or Thursday.
We still have a lot of information to find out about Abraham, who was arrested last month in Georgia on DUI charges. It was his second such violation since coming into the NFL. Given that fact, Abraham is probably looking at a suspension--probably around two to four games.
He led the Cardinals with 11.5 sacks in 2013.

Saints Backfield: Now let’s move on down to New Orleans, where we’ve got some fresh info on the Saints’ RB situation.
Given the departure of uber-back Darren Sproles (via trade), there have been some question marks as far as the workload division between the remaining RBs on the team. The Saints are left with Mark Ingram, Pierre Thomas and Khiry Robinson, and according to sources close to the team, all three will get a pretty evenly-distributed workload during the regular season.
New Orleans also has Travaris Cadet, who will get a few looks as a pass-catcher here and there, but the bulk of the touches will go to their three top backs. None of them is quite as dynamic as Sproles, however, so we could see a different look in the running game this year.
Josh Gordon Latest: We’ll have to wait until tomorrow (at the earliest) to find out the fate of suspended Browns WR Josh Gordon. His appeal hearing wrapped up Friday night at around 7 p.m. ET and will get going again tomorrow afternoon. It’s been a lengthy process so far.
There’s been all sorts of speculation surrounding the length of Gordon’s eventual suspension for his latest violation of the league’s substance abuse policy. Most people believe he’ll be banned from the NFL for at least a year, but there are other hopeful voices out there (mostly Browns fans) who think we might see him in the 2014 season after all. We’ll find out very soon, either way.
Week 1 Schedule: Now that the schedules have been released, we can start looking forward to the on-field action as we warm up for the 2014 campaign. Here’s a look at the first week of the season, which begins September 4.
