NFL Updates: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
August 6, 2014
The preseason continues to gain steam in the NFL, and along with it comes plenty of intrigue and excitement over the developing storylines out there. With that in mind, let’s take our daily look at some of the notable happenings around the league and see what we can make of them. Here’s the latest.
Bennett Suspension: Here’s an interesting--and rather odd--story out of Bears camp. The team suspended their No. 1 TE Martellus Bennett indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team. The move stems from an occurrence on Monday during practice, when Bennett got into a fight with rookie CB Kyle Fuller. Bennett shoved Fuller and threw him to the ground after Fuller pulled him down following a reception.
The suspension also carries a fine, but Bennett didn’t seem too concerned about it when questioned by the media on Monday.

Gordon Ruling: No, we don’t have a ruling on suspended Browns WR Josh Gordon just yet, but we’ll be getting one soon, according to the latest reports.
Gordon’s appeal hearing lasted a whopping 12 ½ hours in total over two sessions on Friday and Monday. The expectation is that we’ll get a decision on the length of his suspension within a week or so of the hearing, which would make it around five days from now.
In the meantime, we may get news of an agreement between the two sides to shorten Gordon’s perceived year-long suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy (again), so we’ll keep you posted on that.
Injury Nuggets: Let’s check out a few of the injury issues out there and see what we can come up with on some of the ailing players in the league.
Montee Ball should be recovered well in time for the Broncos’ season opener. He underwent an emergency appendectomy on Monday.
The Giants’ TE Daniel Fells sustained a bone bruise in Sunday’s preseason opener, and not a sprained knee. The team had initially feared the worst, but it seems he’ll be okay.
Elsewhere in Denver, new WR Emmanuel Sanders sustained a very minor thigh strain in practice this week. He’s expected to be just fine.
Week 1 Schedule: Now that the schedules have been released, we can start looking forward to the on-field action as we warm up for the 2014 campaign. Here’s a look at the first week of the season, which begins September 4.
