NFL Updates: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
August 7, 2014
With each passing day, the NFL regular season inches closer and closer. In these last few weeks leading up until the Week 1 opener, we’re sure to see plenty of developments that will shape the outlooks of teams around the league. With that in mind, let’s take our daily look at some of the headlines out there.
Moreno Update: The Knowson Moreno saga down in South Beach has been quite the debacle for the Phins so far this off-season, but it appears there’s some light at the end of the proverbial tunnel. Yesterday, the team activated him from the PUP list, which means he’s now able to practice and participate in preseason games.
As recently as this past weekend, sources close to the team were claiming that Moreno was in grave danger of missing the entire preseason thanks to arthroscopic knee surgery late last month. That said, we fully expect the Dolphins to move at a glacial pace on this, so as not to jeopardize Moreno’s health.
Once the season begins, it will be interesting to see how Miami utilizes Lamar Miller alongside Moreno. Stay tuned on this one.

Danny Amendola, WR, New England Patriots: This week, with the Patriots and Redskins participating in a joint practice, we got to see a few very interesting performances on both sides. One player the Patriots faithful are raving about is Danny Amendola, who turned some heads in Tuesday’s session.
In that practice, he posted five catches and two scores during team drills, with one of the touchdowns coming on a nice 35-yard grab.
Here’s the catch with Amendola, however. He was able to play in just 12 games last season thanks to injury, and has been a health liability for pretty much his entire NFL career thus far. That said, if he can stay healthy we see a huge year for him and the Patriots offense, which also will benefit from getting big TE Rob Gronkowski back to 100 percent.
Santonio Holmes Outlook: This week, we had a couple of Santonio Holmes sightings, so let’s check out what’s happening there and see if we can speculate on his future.
Holmes worked out for the Bears on Tuesday, and he’s also reportedly getting some interest from a team in dire need of WR help, the Cleveland Browns. Neither team seemed to be in a rush to sign him, but the interest was there.
The Bears need some WR depth with Marquess Wilson breaking his clavicle this week, and the Browns simply need any notable name to help fill the void left by Josh Gordon’s looming suspension.
Adding to the insult, Chicago ended up signing an undrafted free agent who has never played in an NFL game (Greg Herd) over Santonio.
Holmes has something of a reputation as locker-room poison, so any team interested at all will probably explore their every option before committing here.
Week 1 Schedule: Now that the schedules have been released, we can start looking forward to the on-field action as we warm up for the 2014 campaign. Here’s a look at the first week of the season, which begins September 4.
