NFL Updates: News from Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
August 12, 2014
Within a couple more days, we’ll have all sorts more NFL preseason action to build off of and determine the nuances of the upcoming season. While we’re waiting, let’s take our daily look around the league and check in on some of the developing storylines out there right now. Here’s a closer look.
Injury Updates: We’ll start things out today by taking a quick look around the league at some of the notable injury situations out there.
Green Bay’s Jordy Nelson is considered day-to-day with a hamstring injury. He wasn’t able to practice yesterday.
The Jaguars’ Toby Gerhart told the media that he’s planning on practicing today. He’s been out for over a week with a hip flexor issue. If he can practice today, he may be able to appear in Thursday’s game against the Bears.
New England backup QB Ryan Mallett has now missed two straight practices. It’s tough getting straight injury information out of the Pats, but it’s believed that he’s struggling with a knee injury.
Cleveland TE Jordan Cameron is dealing with a sprained AC joint. He reportedly injured himself during a scrimmage early this month. He was back at practice yesterday wearing a non-contact jersey.
Both Arian Foster and Andre Johnson were out of practice yet again yesterday. Johnson is dealing with a hamstring issue, but Foster’s situation is undisclosed at the moment (according to rumor, it’s a hamstring issue as well). Texans coach Bill O’Brien said he’s remaining hopeful that the pair will be able to participate in Saturday’s preseason game against the Falcons.
Dennis Pitta of the Ravens sat out practice yesterday thanks to what’s called a “little” ankle sprain. He sat out Sunday’s session as well.
DeSean Jackson of the Redskins says he’ll be playing on Monday against Cleveland. He’s been fighting off an ankle injury recently.
Saints Backfield: Though New Orleans RB Pierre Thomas has seen plenty of praise from teammates and finished the 2013 year with more touches than any other RB, he’s still listed as third on the team’s depth chart.
Both Mark Ingram and Khiry Robinson are listed ahead of Thomas, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be any meat left on the bone for him. Thomas is supposedly going to help fill some of the void left by departed star Darren Sproles, so we’ll have to watch how the carries and touches are divided up once the season begins.
Week 1 Schedule: Now that the schedules have been released, we can start looking forward to the on-field action as we warm up for the 2014 campaign. Here’s a look at the first week of the season, which begins September 4.
