The Denver Broncos get a preview of their season matchup with the Niners on Sunday when Denver heads to Levi’s Stadium.
The San Francisco 49ers got ran over by the Ravens in their first outing, falling to Baltimore 23-3. I’m sure that winning against his brother wasn’t first on his mind, but still Jim Harbaugh is one of the most competitive guys around, and I’m sure deep down he would have loved a win. Most importantly for the Niners, there were no major injuries. Colin Kaepernick played just one series, completing one pass on the night to TE2 Vance McDonald. McDonald had a slow rookie season for the Niners, but reports are out of camp that he is looking strong and ready to make a bigger contribution this season. One person who did make a good impression for the Niners was Carlos Hyde, the rookie out of Ohio State. Hyde showed good vision and quickness to get to the edge, and in what is now a beat up Niners backfield, his emergence is becoming important in his role of spelling Frank Gore. The 49ers defense didn’t look strong at all, especially against the Ravens starters, but San Francisco sat a lot of guys the entire game, so there isn’t a ton to go on here statistically., with the exception of Dial and Carradine showing up nicely, coming off their “redshirt” season.

The Denver Broncos got the Super Bowl monkey off their bank in their first outing, getting revenge on Seattle and letting everyone know once and for all who the better team is. Or not. Denver did get a win against Seattle however, and once again Manning looked like Manning. Peyton completed 10/13 for 78 yards against the Seahawks and has been quoted as saying that he is expecting more playing time here on Sunday. The Broncos want to do whatever they can to keep the MVP upright, but essentially what Manning says, goes, and I do expect to see him stay in for another series or two. Unless the Niners pass rush is getting to him of course, in which case I’m sure Fox will have a quick hook. Osweiller has the respect of Elway as Manning’s backup, and while I’m sure the Broncos don’t want to see him on the field when the Broncos play for keeps, Brock has done well in the preseason and should have success against this Niner secondary, and reserve front seven.
I have to take the Broncos here. These are a couple of popular teams, that people love to bet on. There looks to be a lot of action on the Niners right now, pushing this number above three. I don’t think the fact that this will be the opener for Levi’s Stadium will be that big of an issue for the Broncos here, as this is just a preseason warmup, for both the team and the stadium. The Broncos are deeper at the quarterback position, and knowing this I don’t see Harbaugh playing Colin Kaepernick much past a series or two.
