NFL Updates: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
August 17, 2014
As more preseason games tick off the NFL schedule, we’re getting a clearer picture of the upcoming regular season. While we’re patiently waiting on Week 1 to arrive, let’s take our daily look at a few notable players and headlines out there to see what’s happening around the league.
Josh Gordon Status: We’ll be frank: We (and pretty much everyone else out there) expected a decision on Gordon a long time ago. He’s been in limbo ever since his latest drug infraction, and the league still hasn’t handed down the exact length of his suspension just yet.
In the meantime, Gordon has been able to practice, but he’s been sitting out recently due to an abdominal injury. He was back out on the practice field yesterday, though, which means we could see him in the game on Monday night against the Redskins. The NFL, however, could rain on that parade by handing down his suspension before then.

Shonn Greene Status: Titans fans held their collective breath when RB Shonn Greene went down with a knee injury during Friday night’s preseason game against the Saints. There’s good news here, though, as it appears he’s going to be okay.
There was some initial concern after Greene was injured, as he’s had arthroscopic surgery on it two times since hurting it initially in Week 1 of last season. This newest ailment seems to be an aggravation of that injury. After the game, Greene declared himself “good,” saying that he believed it to simply be hyper-extended.
Holmes Latest: Has embattled ex-Jets and Steelers wide receiver Santonio Holmes finally found a home? It appears that way. News broke yesterday that the Bears were set to ink him to a deal, a development which comes a week or so after the team was initially said to be interested in him. Cleveland was also said to be kicking the tires there, but they apparently opted not to pursue another possible locker room distraction (not to mention a health case--Holmes recently suffered a serious Lisfranc injury in his foot).
Though he’s still got some top-notch name recognition, things won’t be a walk in the park for Holmes with the Bears. He’ll be relegated to a No. 3 role at best behind top dogs Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery, and will face an uphill battle in putting his bad-boy image behind him. On the bright side, if everything works out this is a great pickup for the Bears, as they’ll add yet another potent downfield weapon to their already stacked arsenal.
Week 1 Schedule: Now that the schedules have been released, we can start looking forward to the on-field action as we warm up for the 2014 campaign. Here’s a look at the first week of the season, which begins September 4.
