The Line: See the Latest Odds
With the 2014 NFL season right around the corner, let’s take a look at some of the coaches who have a chance to win the AP Coach of the Year award. Oddmakers have New England Patriots Bill Belichick as the opening favorite at +800, but there’s greater value if you take a look a little further.
Here are some of the NFL coaches you should consider when handicapping this future bet.
USA TODAY Sports
Chuck Pagano, Indianapolis Colts - The first name that jumped out to me was Chuck Pagano, as the Colts head coach has odds of +2200 to win the AP Coach of the Year. That’s quite the value considering Pagano has led the Colts to a 22-10 record in his first two seasons and now has his most talented team yet. Andrew Luck is entering his third season, which is the year most quarterbacks begin to really turn the corner, and he has tons of weapons around him including a healthy Reggie Wayne. I really like the Indianapolis Colts to do damage this season and give them a punchers chance to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. If the Colts come anywhere close to fulfilling my expectations, you can bet Pagano will win this award and make you a lot richer than you were before the season.
Bill O’Brien, Houston Texans - Bill O’Brien is a first-year head coach and is taking over a Houston Texans team that won just two games last season. If O’Brien has any type of major success in his first season, he’s winning the AP Coach of the Year under those circumstances. That makes odds of +2000 simply impossible to turn down. What makes things even sweeter is that the Texans still have a talented team on both sides of the ball, they just need to find a reliable quarterback who can manage the game and avoid turnovers. Rookie coaches are always treated a little differently than veterans, and if O’Brien can lead Houston to the playoffs, the award is his and you have a sweet payday.
Mike Smith, Atlanta Falcons - The Atlanta Falcons are poised to be the biggest turnaround team this season, which bodes well for Mike Smith’s chances of winning the AP Coach of the Year. The Falcons were a Super Bowl contender last year and for whatever reason completely failed and only won four games. Well, that same Falcons team returns and is once again one of the playoff favorites with all the talent on both sides of the ball. Say the Atlanta Falcons improve by six wins and get into the playoffs, that provides Smith with a great case to win the award as the top NFL coach this season. Voters look feel good stories and coaches who improve greatly from year-to-year. With odds of +1800, you really can’t go wrong backing the Atlanta Falcons head coach for this future bet.
