Top Ten Biggest NFL Comebacks in History
Information About the Largest NFL Comebacks in League History
2014 NFL Off-Season
Despite the fact that it’s just pre-season, I’m still kind of reeling from the Colts astounding loss to the Giants after leading by 26 points on Saturday. It got me thinking about comebacks, though, so today we’re going to break down the top ten largest comebacks in NFL (regular season) history.
1. On December 7, 1980, the San Francisco 49ers came back from a 28 point deficit to beat the New Orleans Saints with a score of 38-35.
2. On September 21, 1997, the Buffalo Bills staged a massive comeback, making-up a 26 point deficit to beat the Indianapolis Colts 37-35. Indy would go on to draft a kid named Peyton Manning with the No. 1 overall pick in the 1998 draft.
3. The Saint Louis Cardinals, playing their last season in Missouri, came back from a 25 point deficit to best the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on November 8, 1987. The final score of the game was 31-28.
4. On October 27, 1946, the Philadelphia Eagles were down 24 points (fair warning, you’re going to get sick of the number 24) against the Washington Redskins. Philly, under the leadership of QB Tommy Thompson, went on to win the match-up 28-24.
(4*) 5. The Detroit Lions were losing to Johnny Unitas’s Baltimore Colts by 24 points on October 20, 1957. The Lions made-up the deficit and held the Colts to 0 points in the 4th quarter, ultimately winning 31-27.
(4*) 6. On October 25, 1959, the Philadelphia Eagles once again found themselves losing by 24 points, this time to the Chicago Bears. After going scoreless in the first half, the Eagles won the game 28-24.
(4*) 7. On October 23, 1960, the Denver Broncos were down 24 points at home against the Boston Patriots. The Broncos staged a second-half comeback, winning 31-24.
(4*) 8. 14 years later, on December 25, 1974, the Miami Dolphins also found themselves losing to the New England Patriots by 24 points. The Dolphins kicked it into high-gear and won 34-27.
(4*) 9. After being down by 24 points, the Minnesota Vikings ultimately beat the San Francisco 49ers by a single point, 28-27.
(4*) 10. On September 23, 1979, the Denver Broncos were down 24 points against the Seattle Seahawks (sound familiar?) In this case, though, the Broncs ended up winning 37-34.
(4*) 11. The same day, September 23, 1979, the Houston Oilers came back from a 24 point deficit to beat the Cincinnati Bengals.
(4*) 12. After being down 24 points, the L.A. Raiders ultimately bested the San Diego Chargers 28-24 on November 22, 1984.
(4*) 13. Four years later, on September 26, 1988, the L.A. Raiders came back from another 24 point deficit to beat the Denver Broncos 30-27.
(4*) 14. After another four years, the L.A. Rams found themselves down 24 points against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They wound up winning 31-27.
(4*) 15. On October 2, 2011, the Detroit Lions came back from a 24 point deficit to beat the Dallas Cowboys by 4 points, 34-30.
(4*) 16. The Denver Broncos staged a huge second half comeback to beat the San Diego Chargers 35-24 on October 15, 2012.
(4*) 17. Just last year, the New England Patriots were down 24 points against the Denver Broncos. The Pats scored 34 points in the second half to win 34-31.
