NFL Updates: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
August 19, 2014
With week three of the NFL preseason creeping ever closer, we’re going to be getting our first look at what the regular season may have in store for our favorite teams and players. With that in mind, let’s take our daily stroll around the league and see what’s happening out there in football land. Here’s the latest.
Jamaal Charles Health: On Sunday night, the Kansas City Chiefs spent their loss to the Carolina Panthers with a very conspicuous absentee. Uber-running-back Jamaal Charles was back at home nursing a foot injury while the starters played the entire first half, which raised some questions as far as his overall health.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid downplayed the injury, naturally, saying that Charles “twisted his foot” after practice as the team was leaving and was held out of Sunday’s preseason game due to “precautionary measures.”
Reid’s comments should help calm a nervous fan base, but before we can give Charles a clean bill of health we need to see him in action. Without him on the field, the KC offense is nowhere near as effective as it could be, as he’s far and away the team’s most important and talented player.

Reggie Wayne Status: Are we going to (finally) get our first glimpse of the Colts’ Reggie Wayne in preseason action this Saturday against the Saints? Well, that depends on who you ask. Some sources close to the team seem convinced that the veteran WR will suit up this weekend and test his surgically-repaired knee at full game speed before the regular season, but Colts coach Chuck Pagano doesn’t sound so convinced.
Pagano says there’s a “possibility” that Wayne will play, adding that the team will keep a close eye on him during practice this week and “see how he goes.”
It sounds like the team’s just being extra-cautious here, but if we had to guess we’d say Wayne will make an appearance at least. The offense needs to get in sync with him on the field, and they’re running out of opportunities to do it.
Drew Brees Status: Let’s stick with that Saints-Colts matchup and head to the main injury concern on the other side. Brees is back in practice this week following a minor oblique strain that kept him out of action since August 1.
It’s pretty easy to understand how cautious the Saints are being here, what with the trouble an oblique injury can place on a quarterback’s throwing motion. That said, the Saints fully anticipate that Brees will be in action on Saturday for the game against the Colts in Indianapolis (barring a setback, of course). He’ll be out there for the final preseason game next weekend as well.
Week 1 Schedule: Now that the schedules have been released, we can start looking forward to the on-field action as we warm up for the 2014 campaign. Here’s a look at the first week of the season, which begins September 4.
