NFL Updates: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
August 24, 2014
We got another dose of NFL preseason action yesterday, and we’ve got some more in store for today as well. While we’re waiting on those games, let’s take our daily look around the league and see which players and teams out there are making news right now. Here’s the latest.
Cutler Outlook: Now that we’ve had a full day to digest the Bears’ performance against the Seahawks on Friday night, let’s take a closer look at Cutler’s numbers and see what we can come up with.
He didn’t look all that great against the best defense in the league, managing to complete 12 of 20 throws for 157 yards and an interception. That translates to an ugly 64.0 passer rating.
Still, we need to consider the competition here. Even the Seahawks’ backups could make up a formidable NFL defense, so we’re speaking in relative terms. That said, with the Bears leaning so heavily on offense these days, it’s a cause for concern in a game that’s supposed to be a dress rehearsal for the regular season. All in all, Chicago will be fine, though. They simply have too many weapons on that side of the ball.

B.J. Raji Update: According to reports that emerged yesterday, the Packers have lost a key piece of their defense, and it will be for the entire season. Raji suffered a torn right biceps during Friday’s preseason game, and though the team remained hopeful throughout the day, it was later confirmed that he’d be missing out on the entirety of 2014.
This is devastating news to Raji, who had just signed a one-year “prove-it” deal with Green Bay totaling $4 million. Now we’ll have to wait another season to see if he can rebound from his disastrous 2013 campaign.
Eagles Injuries: Let’s take a moment to go over a few of the various injury situations afflicting some of the big-name Eagles players.
The good news here is that a quartet of health concerns was were all able to practice yesterday. DBs Cary Williams and Brandon Boykin (who both had hamstring issues), running back LeSean McCoy (who had a thumb injury) and wide receiver Jeremy Maclin (knee problem) all missed time in the team’s most recent preseason game, so it was good to see them up and around.
The most notable issue there stems from McCoy, but it seems his thumb is fine after tests last week revealed he suffered no significant injury in his last outing.
Week 1 Schedule: Now that the schedules have been released, we can start looking forward to the on-field action as we warm up for the 2014 campaign. Here’s a look at the first week of the season, which begins September 4.
