The San Francisco 49ers and the San Diego Chargers face off on Sunday in San Francisco for their week three NFL preseason matchup.
The San Francisco 49ers have looked awful thus far in preseason and while it may be too early to start pushing the panic button, it is tough to believe that they aren’t at least a little concerned. In all fairness Colin Kaepernick hasn’t played a ton but it si clear if he goes down it is dire starits for the 49ers as they will be hard pressed to even win a game as neither Baline Gabbert nor Josh Johnson inspires any type of confidence. Carlos Hyde looks to be a star in the making and will be pushing Frank Gore for playing time. The 49ers are stocked at receiver adding Steve Johnson and Bruce Ellington to the mix that already includes Anquan Bolden, Michael Crabtree, and Vernon Davis. What has been mystifying throught the firs two games f the preseason is just how bad the 49ers defense has been. San Francisco’s defense has gone beyond just being about Patrick Willis but with NaVorro Bowman missing they have big shoes to fill. The bottom line: San Francisco has scored a total of three points in two games and even in preseason that doesn’t get it done.

The San Diego Chargers were a surprise playoff team last season but they took it to another level winning a playoff game and really were never out of it in their second round game. Phillip Rivers may not be the most liked player in the NFL but he has one of the best arms in the game and Kellen Clemens might never have become a legitimate starter in the NFL but he’s a solid backup. The Chargers have a decent backfield with Ryan Mathews, Donald Brown, and Danny Woodhead and rookie Marion Grice had a monster career in college and a real nose for the endzone. Keenan Allen is a star at receiver and Antonio Gates was as healthy as he was in years last season but the Chargers could use some help. Eric Weddle is still the key to the Chargers defense and Corey Liuget can bring the heat but they will need production elsewhere as well.
While it’s tough to make a call on a team in preseason, we are going to get a better indication here what these teams are made of as week 3 is generally the “dress rehearsal” in the NFL and I don’t like what I have seen from the Niners so far. If Blaine Gabbert is expected to see any time at all for San Fran, it isn’t something that is a positive for them. I like the Chargers in this one in what would be a very good regular season matchup.
