NFL Updates: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
August 29, 2014
Now that all those pesky preseason games are out of the way, we’ve got a clear shot toward the NFL regular season on Thursday. There’s plenty to talk about until then, so with that said let’s take our daily look around the league and see which players are making headlines.
Gordon in the CFL: Now that Browns uber-WR Josh Gordon has been suspended from the NFL for a year for his third violation of the league’s substance abuse policy, it’s now time to speculate on how he’ll occupy himself during his banishment. If he and his camp have their way, it’ll be north of the border in the Canadian Football League.
Gordon’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, has reportedly been working with both the NFL and CFL on clearing the way for Gordon to be able to join the Calgary Stampeders. That said, the Browns aren’t expected to allow their top wide receiver to get dinged up (and possibly injured) in the CFL.
Considering that, we doubt that Gordon will be playing any football this season, but stranger things have happened.

Peterson in Dallas?: Here’s a potentially interesting scenario shaping up in Dallas. Vikings star RB Adrian Peterson reportedly told Cowboys owner Jerry Jones that he’d like to come play in Dallas once his tenure with Minnesota is finished. Jones apparently had mutual interest and called himself a “fan” of Peterson’s.
This story seems a little odd, but it does hold some water. Peterson is a native of Texas, and has been quoted as saying he’s thought about playing for the Cowboys. Standing in the way, however, is his seven-year, $96-million contract with the Vikings. He’s currently in year four and is bound through 2017.
It’ll be a while before this story has an ending (unless some sort of high-profile trade occurs), so don’t expect the speculation to stop any time soon.
Carr Preseason: The whole “intense competition” out there in Oakland between quarterbacks Matt Schaub and Derek Carr hasn’t panned out to be quite as crazy as most people thought it would, but Carr is still putting up nice numbers in the preseason. He was great in the finale last night, leading the team on four touchdown drives.
Carr finished with an 11-of-14 line for 143 yards and three touchdowns against the best defense in the league (Seattle). That gives him a total preseason stat of 30-of-45 passing and 326 yards.
It’s pretty safe to say that there will be significant rumblings for Carr to start, even before the team runs into trouble on the schedule.
Week 1 Schedule: The regular season is (finally) upon us, and we can start looking forward to the on-field action as we anticipate the 2014 campaign. Here’s a look at the first week of the season.
