The Tennessee Titans look to make some noise in the AFC South this season as they kick off their 2014 campaign on the road against the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Titans will have some fresh faces donning the double blue this season as they look to improve on their seven wins from a year ago but they are in tough to start the year against the Kansas City Chiefs who were an 11-5 squad a year ago and made the playoffs. Tennessee has to contend with the Colts atop the division but other than Indy the Titans should be in the clear as both Jacksonville and Houston continue to rebuild but their team success will depend largely on the health of Jake Locker. The former Washington Huskies pivot hasn’t lived up to expectation but that is due to his inability to stay healthy as the strong armed pivot has played well when given the opportunity and if he can stay off the IR this year he has a great shot at leading the Titans to the postseason. Chris Johnson is out but the tandem of rookie Bishop Sankey and former Jets RB Shonn Greene should fill the void and both Justin Hunter and Kendall Wright are poised for a number of targets through the air.

The Chiefs were a playoff team a year ago as they finished behind the Denver Broncos in the AFC West but their 11-5 mark locked them into a wild card spot which they ultimately dropped in expected fashion. The Chiefs are a solid team but to me aren’t a great team and were huge beneficiaries of the league’s easiest schedule a year ago and I think it’ll take much more this season to repeat those 11 wins and that starts in week one against an underrated Tennessee team. Jamaal Charles is unquestionably one of the best backs in football and is primed for another successful season but beyond their running game the Chiefs are a bit thin on offense as Alex Smith is far from an elite talent and Dwayne Bowe’s stock continues to fall. Arrowhead Stadium is always a tough place to play and the Chiefs came out and smacked the Bills in the mouth to kick off 2013 and while it is more than plausible to expect that again here I just don’t see it being too lopsided in the end. Locker can throw the ball and he has as much if not more talent to work with than Smith and while I don’t like the line sitting at 5.5 points I do think Tennessee will keep this close in a shootout type game.
