New England Patriots at Minnesota Vikings- 9/14/14

New England Patriots (0-1) at Minnesota Vikings (1-0)

NFL Football: Sunday, September 14, 2014 at 1:00 pm (TCF Bank Stadium)

The Line: Minnesota Vikings +4.5 -- Over/Under: 49 See the Latest Odds

The Patriots look to avoid falling in an 0-2 hole as they take to the road once again to face off against the Vikings in Minnesota.

The New England Patriots have been a perennial Super Bowl contender for the last decade but over the last two seasons it looks as though they are primed to take a step back and after dropping their season opener in Miami last weekend they face an 0-2 mark heading home next week. The Patriots will always be a threat so long as Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are calling the shots but the supporting cast for those two has dwindled over the years and it could be a sign of things to come as Patriots football could be facing an overhaul. New England revved up their defense in the offseason in an attempt to keep pace with the Broncos and while their defensive unit wasn’t to blame for their week one loss they didn’t exactly get the job done either and Knowshon Moreno ran at will on a suspect Pats run defense. New England will look to get back in the win column as they take on a Vikings team who absolutely pasted the Rams last weekend in St. Louis.

New England Patriots at Minnesota Vikings- 9/14/14

The Vikings made things look easy against St. Louis last weekend and while the Rams are a hurting unit I don’t think it would have mattered has they been at full health as it was just Minnesota’s day. The Vikes made some strides on the defensive side of the ball in the offseason as well and are a unit that is certainly on the rise and while the Packers remain the class of the NFC North and the Lions and Bears look to be in a better position on paper they certainly could create some noise in the division this season. Adrian Peterson remains one of the game’s best backs despite a lackluster opening weekend and as long as Matt Cassel isn’t causing more harm than good than he is certainly more than serviceable for the time being. I like this spot for the Vikings but you know that New England will come out looking for blood and as such it makes this line and outcome very tough to call. As such, I think it is best to look at the total here and while both teams have play makers on offense I look for the defense to decide things here and I like the final to stay under the total at 49.
