NFL Updates: News From Around the League, Schedule and More
October 6, 2014
The bulk of the Week 5 games in the NFL are all finished up, but we’ve got one more matchup to look forward to this evening. In the meantime, let’s take our daily look around the league and see which players are making headlines for their on-field play right now.
SNF Wrap-Up: Rumors of the Patriots’ demise have been greatly exaggerated. After an ugly loss at the hands of the Chiefs on national television last week, New England rallied for an equally impressive win over the Bengals on national television last night.
Tom Brady led the way for the Pats, tossing 292 yards (his first time over 250 this season). Stevan Ridley posted 113 yards in a dominant rushing display (220 total yards). Rob Gronkowski came up with 100 yards receiving and a touchdown on six grabs. All of it added up to a 43-17 New England victory that silenced the doubters and put the team back in firm control of the AFC East.

Even when backup QB Michael Vick came on in relief of Geno Smith yesterday during the Jets’ 31-0 embarrassment at the hands of the Chargers, New York fans couldn’t get a silver lining to that cloudy day.
Vick was somehow almost worse than Smith, posting 8-of-19 passing for just 47 yards.
Things won’t get easier anytime soon for the hapless Jets. They’ve got a game against the Broncos this week.
In other more positive QB news, the Rams have a little hope for the future after QB Austin Davis posted another nice game in an eventual loss against the Eagles.
He managed 375 pass yards and a trio of touchdowns, which was his second straight three-TD day. Can he keep it going? We’ll find out this week against the 49ers when he gets a bit of a tougher test.
We may have just witnessed the changing of the guard in the Giants backfield. Even though Rashad Jennings was just two weeks removed from a huge game against Houston, the fact that he was injured against Atlanta in Week 5 may have sealed his fate.
The team seems to be leaning toward utilizing backup RB Andre Williams, as even before Jennings' injury the team was showing their preference in snap counts and key sets.
The Giants have a big game ahead against the Eagles this week, and what they do at RB could signify their plans for the future.
