The San Diego Chargers and the Kansas City Chiefs face off on Sunday in San Diego in an AFC West NFL battle.
The San Diego Chargers are in first place in the AFC West as they are feeding off of their playoff win a year ago. The Chargers are coming off of a comeback win at Oakland and the offense is averaging 27.3 points and 378.2 yards per game. Chargers QB Phillip Rivers is having a big year completing 69.3 percent of his passes for 15 touchdowns and just two interceptions. San Diego is going through the running backs and Donald Brown is still questionable for this one but it has been Brandon Oliver who is averaging 4.4 yards per carry with two touchdowns. Keenan Allen is the Chargers leading receiver with 28 receptions and Antonio Gates has 24 catches and six touchdowns. The Chargers defense allows a second best in the NFL 15.2 points per game and a third best 308.3 yards per game and they are plus seven in turnover ratio. Donald Butler has 36 tackles, Eric Weddle has 34 tackles, and Brandon Flowers has two interceptions. The Chargers are flying a little under the radar since they play in the same division as the Broncos but they are clearly one of the top teams in the NFL this season.
USA TODAY Sports
The Kansas City Chiefs are 2-3 and at a pivotal point in the season with the AFC West coming up tough at the top. The Chiefs are coming off of a bye and the offense is averaging 23.8 points and 335 yards per game led by QB Alex Smith who has completed 63.3 percent of his passes with eight touchdowns and four interceptions. Knile Davis has taken the bulk of the carries averaging 4.5 yards per carry with three touchdowns and Jamaal Charles is averaging 4.6 yards per carry and he has two receiving touchdowns. Travis Kelce has 20 receptions and Dwayne Bowe has 14 receptions as the K.C. passing game hasn’t been all that effective. Defensively they Chiefs have been stellar allowing a fifth best in the NFL 20.2 points and 341.8 yards per game and they are a minus three in turnover ratio. Josh Mauga has 36 tackles, Ron Parker has 26 tackles, and Justin Houston has 6.0 sacks. The Chiefs made a living creating turnovers last season but they haven’t had the same results this season.
San Diego is 7-1 against the spread in their last eight games, 6-1 against the spread in their last seven games following a win, and 7-2 against the spread following a game that they didn’t cover the spread. Kansas City is 9-3 against the spread in their last 12 road games and 4-1 against the spread after allowing more than 350 yards their previous game.
Both of these teams are big on defense but the over has hit the last four times they have played and I look for that to happen again as there are plenty of athletes on both sides and the rules cater to scoring. My stronger play is on who will cover the point spread and I will post that in the Premium Area as well as on the App.
