Top Ten Narrowest Super Bowl Wins in NFL History

Which Super Bowls Have Been Decided By the Smallest Margin?

2014 NFL Season

See the Latest Odds

Last night, the San Francisco Giants (read: Madison Bumgarner) beat the Kansas City Royals by a single run to win the 2014 World Series. Congrats, Bay Area! Since I can manage to make anything relate to football, I figured we’d take a look at the top ten narrowest Super Bowl wins in league history.

Top Ten Narrowest Super Bowl Wins in NFL History

1. In 1990, the New York Giants beat the Buffao Bills by just one point to win Super Bowl XXV 20-19.

2. In 2012, Super Bowl XLVII between the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers was decided by 3 points (and, many still believe, a power outage), with Baltimore winning 34-31.

(2*) 3. 2007’s Super Bowl XLII was also decided by a mere 3 points. The New York Giants beat the New England Patriots 17-14.

(2*) 4. The New England Patriots beat the Philadelphia Eagles by 3 points, 24-21, in 2004’s Super Bowl XXXIX.

(2*) 5. With a final score of 32-29, the Pats also won 2003’s Super Bowl XXXVII over the Carolina Panthers by just 3 points.

(2*) 6. Once again, the Pats (who are clearly involved in a lot of nerve-wracking Super Bowls) won 2001’s Super Bowl XXXVI against the St. Louis Rams by a field goal, 20-17.

(2*) 7. The Baltimore Colts beat the Dallas Cowboys by 3 points in 1970’s Super Bowl V. The Colts won 16-13.

8. In 2011, the New York Giants beat the New England Patriots by 4 points to win Super Bowl XLVI. The final score was 21-17.

(8*) 9. 2008’s Super Bowl XLIII was also decided by 4 points, with the Pittsburgh Steelers beating the Arizona Cardinals 27-23.

(8*) 10. In 1988, the San Francisco 49ers beat the Cincinnati Bengals by 4 points, 20-16, to win Super Bowl XXIII.

(8*) 11. You might think you’re seeing double on these last two. The Pittsburgh Steelers won 1975’s Super Bowl X over the Dallas Cowboys by 4 points. The final score was 21-17.

(8*) 12. In 1978, the Pittsburgh Steelers once again bested the Dallas Cowboys to win Super Bowl XIII by 4 points, 35-31.
