2014 NFL Season

See the Latest Odds

Yesterday was a doozy for a lot of teams around the league. One point victories abounded in Jacksonville, Baltimore, and Tampa Bay. Two of those three games were won by the road team, which got me thinking about the biggest road comebacks in NFL history. Today, we’re going to break down the top ten.

Top Ten Biggest Road Comebacks in NFL History

1. We’ll start today’s list with an unlikely team. The Cleveland Browns just this year (on October 5) came back from a 25 point deficit to beat the Tennessee Titans on their home turf.

2. On October 27, 1946, the Philadelphia Eagles made-up a 24 point deficit to beat the Washington Redskins in DC.

(2*) 3. Just call Philly the comeback kids. On October 25, 1959 they once again came back from 24 points down to best the Minnesota Vikings at home.

(2*) 4. The Houston Oilers trailed the Cincinnati Bengals by 24 points on September 23, 1979. The Oilers came back to win the ball game in ‘Nati.

(2*) 5. On September 26, 1988, the Los Angeles Raiders erased a 24 point deficit to beat the Denver Broncos at Mile High. I’d like to say I remember this one, but I was just 40-some days old.

(2*) 6. December 6, 1992 saw the Los Angeles Rams come back from 24 points down to beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Sunshine State.

(2*) 7. The Detroit Lions made-up a 24 point deficit to beat the Dallas Cowboys in the great state of Texas on October 2, 2011.

(2*) 8. The Denver Broncos were trailing the San Diego Chargers by 24 points at Qualcomm on October 15, 2012. Manning and Co. erased the deficit and managed to win the game.

9. These final two comebacks took place during the playoffs (and both in NorCal, oddly). On December 22, 1957, the Detroit Lions came back from 20 points down to beat the San Francisco 49ers in one of their last postseason games before Candlestick Park opened.

10. On December 23, 1972, the San Francisco 49ers once again hosted a playoff match-up, this time against the Dallas Cowboys. After trailing by as many as 18 points, the ‘Boys came back to win the contest.
