Position: Defensive End
Career Stats: 82 tackles, 34 tackles for loss, 19 sacks and five forced fumbles.
Strengths: Shane Ray is one of the more aggressive and disruptive pass rushers I’ve seen in a while, and he accomplished this in the SEC where he’s playing some of the top offensive linemen each week. Ray’s first step, speed off the edge and pure quickness makes him a scary matchup for anyone. Ray uses his hands well and plays with great pad level. Ray also showed the ability to drop back into coverage and is one of the top pure tacklers in this draft. Shane Ray is also a very hard worker and one of the more competitive players in this draft class.
Weaknesses: Shane Ray doesn’t have the long arms that you’d like to see from an outside rusher. Due to a lack of pass-rush moves, Ray relies heavily on pure athleticism and speed to gain an advantage. Ray can sometimes be too aggressive off the snap, which tends to take him out of the play if it’s a run.
Projection: There’s little doubt in my mind that Shane Ray is going to have a successful career, as he’s just an athletic freak who is determined to improve his game. I see Ray being a Top-15 pick and an immediate contributor at the next level. Ray will make any defense better.
