USA TODAY Sports
Position: Wide Receiver
Career Stats: 82 receptions, 1,757 receiving yards and 13 receiving touchdowns.
Strengths: Sammie Coates has the look of an NFL receiver, as he has a nice build and enough upper body strength to where he can beat press coverage. Coates is most known for his athleticism and top speed, as he ran a solid 4.43 at the NFL combine. Coates also impressed at the combine with a 41 inch vertical jump and 131 inch broad jump. Coates can jump with the best of them and has impressive body control when in the air. Coates can lineup just about anywhere on the field. Sammie Coates has a quick release off the line and does a good job of creating separation. Coates has also shown the ability to make contested catches and plays in traffic.
Weaknesses: Sammie Coates is a very raw receiver who will need a lot of coaching to reach his full potential. Coates isn’t the most polished route runner and also has very inconsistent hands. Coates can learn to track the ball better when in the air.
Projection: As mentioned in the weaknesses, Sammie Coates has a ways to go from being a productive receiver right away. Coates still drops the ball way too much and has to improve his route running. However, Coates has pretty much everything you look for in a receiver and has extreme upside. Just off ability and potential alone, Coates has to be selected rather early in the upcoming draft.
