School: Stanford Cardinal
USA TODAY Sports
Position: Wide Receiver
Career Stats: 172 receptions, 2,125 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns.
Strengths: Ty Montgomery has average height but is built well with a strong upper-body that allows him to be effective in blocking and breaking press coverage. Montgomery gets off the line quickly and can be quite aggressive to create separation. Montgomery was an extremely effective returner at Stanford and is sure to play a similar role at the next level. Montgomery comes from a pro-style offense and picks things up quickly. Montgomery is solid after the catch and does a nice job of breaking arm tackles. Ty Montgomery comes from a great family, is a leader on and off-the-field and comes with zero baggage.
Weaknesses: Ty Montgomery can get in a bit of funk where he lacks confidence for the rest of the game after making a mistake. Montgomery has issues with ball security and can catch a bad catch of the drops at times. Montgomery catches the ball with his body too often. Montgomery has a slight history of shoulder and knee injuries, which includes shoulder surgery before the 2014 season.
Projection: Ty Montgomery brings more value as a return man than a consistent receiver. I see Montgomery being selected in the fourth round or so, as he will add a spark on special teams, but he must improve his hands to be productive offensively. Still, there’s a place for Montgomery on an NFL roster.
