The Line: -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds

With the first overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have to select quarterback Jameis Winston out of Florida State.

Winston would give the Bucs their first promising quarterback possibly ever, fills a need and would make them a real threat in the always changing NFC South. Right now, the Buccaneers all-time passing leader is Vinny Testaverde. Shall I say more?

Right now, the main concerns with Winston are his off-the-field issues, as he was accused of sexual assault at FSU and was caught shoplifting crab legs. The sexual assault continues to weigh heavy on the people in charge, as that incident continues to play out by the week. Nobody knows exactly how that’s going to play out and when you’re investing millions of dollars, it’s a risky decision to mess with.

Still, Winston is head and shoulders the most talented quarterback in this draft. Unlike Marcus Mariota, there are zero questions of Winston being a system quarterback, and even with the off-the-field incidents, he’s by far the better leader on the field.

Winston has the size, arm strength, athleticism and a football IQ that’s out of this world. He could still use some polish in certain areas but it won’t be long before he sees the field. Mariota brings a lot to the table as well, but he’s rarely taken snaps under center, has never called plays in a huddle and has never played in an offense outside of that gimmicky Oregon stuff. From a football standpoint, Mariota is the bigger risk and would likely need more patience than Winston when it comes to seeing the field.

When your team has the first overall pick, it’s best to go with the guy you’re very confident can carve out a very successful career for the next 10 years. You can’t blow the first overall pick, as it’s a chance to breathe life back into your franchise. You have to make the safe pick and select the player who has the lower percentage to fail, as making the wrong pick could set your franchise back another five years.

Like it or not, the safe quarterback pick in this draft is Winston, even with his immaturity and off-the-field incidents.

The Buccaneers will select the quarterback from Florida State on draft day.
