The Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Saskatchewan Roughriders meet Saturday at the Mosaic Stadium.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are looking to bounce back after a rough 7-11 season last year. The good news for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers is that they found a capable quarterback in Drew Willy, who threw for 14 touchdowns last season and completed nearly 64 percent of his passes. If Willy can trim his league-high 18 interceptions, the Bombers will be cooking with gas. The Blue Bombers improved their offensive line, which should help his growth and open holes for guys such as running back Paris Cotton. The real questions for the Blue Bombers come on the defensive side, as this team couldn’t stop the running game at all. However, there’s still talent on that side of the ball, as Bryant Turner Jr. has 22 career sacks, Greg Peach is coming off a big year and Maurice Leggett finished second in the CFL in interceptions with five.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders look to build on last year’s 10-8 season with a healthy Darian Durant at quarterback. Durant missed a chunk of last season with an elbow injury but is one of the top QBs in the league and has 133 career passing touchdowns. Anthony Allen proved last season he can be a premier running back and the return of Taj Smith will take pressure off Rob Bagg and Chris Getzlaf to do everything. Defensively, the Roughriders are the best pass rushing team in the league with John Chick and Tearrius George leading the charge. The Saskatchewan Roughriders have sleeper written all over them this season. Chaz Schilens is questionable for this game.
The Blue Bombers are 8-20-3 ATS in their last 31 vs. West and 1-5-2 ATS in their last 8 games overall. The Roughriders are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games in June and 1-8 ATS in their last 9 games overall. The Blue Bombers are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 meetings in Saskatchewan.
I don’t feel comfortable with this spread in an opening game, but the over is interesting. Both teams improved their offense enough to where we could see a game in the mid 20s for both teams. I expect a few fireworks and like the number to go over the total.
