Ford Field and the Detroit Lions open up the preseason with a visit from the New York Jets.
Rex Ryan was shown the door in New York and most of us expected it to happen sooner or later but of course didn’t know when. The Jets are Todd Bowles baby now and he inherits an offense that needs to find the end zone more often. Geno Smith has the inside track on Ryan Fitzpatrick but with a few slipups from Smith and he might have a seat on the bench. The addition of receiver Brandon Marshall should help if he remains healthy while Darrelle Revis returns to New York. Guys to watch in the preseason are WR Devin Smith, DE Leonard Smith and of course rookie signal caller Bryce Petty who should see plenty of action in the preseason opener.

The Detroit Lions enter the year in search of back to back postseason appearances for the first time since the mid ‘90’s. Jim Caldwell will have plenty of eyes on him to see if he can duplicate his first year magic which will require him to get a few bodies on both lines. Many of the big names that casual fans know such as Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson will be spectators so what will the Lions put on the field. Kellen Moore and Dan Orlovsky will receive the majority of snaps in some order but they won’t be throwing to Golden Tate or Johnson. Ameer Abdullah might get log a few carries and Ryan Broyles or Lance Moore could have a few balls thrown their way as they battle for the 3rd receiver spot.
The Jets are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall and the under is 4-1 in Jets last 5 games on fieldturf while going 6-2 in Jets last 8 games overall. The over is 4-1 in Lions last 5 Thursday games while the under is 15-5 in Lions last 20 games overall and is 11-4 in Lions last 15 games on fieldturf.
I don’t expect a lot of scoring because most of the weapons each team has won’t see the field for obvious reasons. I think the Jets will have a little more to prove here although that’s splitting hairs. I will take the points in a toss up…
