The Washington Redskins and Atlanta Falcons kick off their preseason schedule in a show down at the Georgia Dome on Thursday.
The Redskins head into this season looking to repeat as NFC East champions but they will have their work cut out for them as the rest of the division has made strides to improve while Washington remains relatively quiet despite franchising Kirk Cousins. The Skins get their first in game action here against the Falcons who should be back in the mix in the NFC South this season if they can get a full season out of Matt Ryan and Julio Jones but they have to contend with the defending Conference champions. Washington head into this game as three point dogs as they potentially have fewer holes to fill in terms of their depth chart but this is always a show case for the bubble guys and you can bet those competing for a spot in play in DC this season will be firing on all cylinders when their number is called.

The Falcons meanwhile head into this season looking to reclaim their spot atop the NFC South division but again they have some tough competition to deal with as the Bucs are getting better, the Saints still have Drew Brees, and the defending NFC champions return most of their star studded roster and get their number one receiver back in Kelvin Benjamin. Atlanta enjoyed the emergence of Devonta Freeman last season and if he can hold up his end of the bargain once again this season the Falcons’ offense should be rock solid once again as Julio Jones continues to be one of the best receivers in the NFL. As for Thursday night’s encounter I do think the Redskins have a few less holes to sort out and as such they won’t have as many guys competing for first and second string slots while the Dirty Birds should have open season on the Redskins, especially as the game opens up.
