The Houston Texans and San Francisco 49ers begin their preseason Sunday night at Levi's Stadium.
The Houston Texans have a chance to make the playoffs for a second straight season for the second time in franchise history. Offensively, the Texans have a new quarterback in Brock Osweiler, who is likely going to get a lot of reps due to being on a new team. Also, Houston is throwing in rookie wide receiver Will Fuller and offensive lineman Nick Martin the starting rotation. Tom Savage and Brandon Weeden will be the two guys fighting for the backup quarterback job. Defensively, the Houston Texans don’t have a single rookie in their first two units, but do have a few guys worth watching later in the game in Ryan Langford, DJ Reader and Shakeel Rashad.

The San Francisco 49ers hope to get back on track after winning just 13 games the last two years and hiring new head coach Chip Kelly. Offensively, the 49ers may have a quarterback controversy on their hands between Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert. It will be interesting to see if the traditional drop back passer can surpass the dual-threat option that’s made Kelly’s system work so well over the years. The 49rs also have a deep, young backfield led by Carlos Hyde, Mike Davis and rookie Kelvin Taylor. Defensively, the San Francisco 49ers rookie defensive end DeForest Buckner is going to find himself starting, while Jered Bell and Shayne Skov have a chance to shine with the second unit and keep a roster spot.
The Texans are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games on grass and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games overall. The 49ers are 6-13 ATS in their last 19 games on grass.
I like backing teams with starting quarterback battles, as the competition usually brings the best out of both guys rather than the usual going through the motions to knock the rust off. Gabbert and Kaepernick are going to want to bring their best game in hopes of getting that starting job.
Because of that, I give the 49ers the edge at home.
