The Miami Dolphins and the Dallas Cowboys face off on Friday in Arlington for a week 2 NFL preseason match up.
The Miami Dolphins have high expectations this year, but a brutal schedule to go with them, however they started the preseason strong pounding the New York Giants 27-10. While the Dolphins clearly have plenty of work to do they look to be younger in spots as they took a look at a lot of players deeper down the depth chart. QB Ryan Tannehill completed 2 of his four passes for Miami while backup Matt Moore completed 71.4 percent of his passes for 122 yards with a touchdown and an interception and rookie Brandon Doughty completed 7 of his 9 passes. There is competition in the Dolphins backfield but Aria Foster didn’t play, Jay Ajayi had just 2 carries, and Isaiah Pead and Daniel Thomas battle it out getting 10 carries each. Dolphins rookie WR Jakeem Grant led the way with four receptions, Leonte Caroo had three catches, and Jarvis Landry had a catch. Defensively the Dolphins allowed 10 points and 227 yards with three fumble recoveries, four casks, and two interceptions. Mike Hull led Miami in tackles with seven and James-Michael Johnson and Walt Aikens each had five tackles. The Dolphins defense controlled the game in week one but we should learn a lot more about this team with more players likely to play during the regular season getting more action in this one.
The Dallas Cowboys got off to a fast start in their week one preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams but they were unable to hold on and took the loss. Despite the loss on the scoreboard there were some exciting developments for the Cowboys to build on. Dallas rookie QB Dak Prescott had a big debut completing 10 of his 12 passes with two touchdowns while Jameill Showers was 8 of 16. Darius Jackson paced the Dallas rushing attack with 12 carries for 47 yard and Alfred Morris had three carries gaining 11 yards. Chris Brown led the Cowboys receivers with three catches, Dez Bryant had two catches with a touchdown, and Cole Beasley had two catches. The Cowboys defense was gouged in the second and they allowed 28 points and 373 yards with one sack and two interceptions. Jeremiah McKinnon led the Cowboys with six tackles and Deon King and Mark Nzeocha each had five tackles. Look for more of the Cowboys starters in this one and we should get a better idea of the progress but it’s already clear the starting O-Line is the strength of this team.
Miami is 5-16 against the spread in their last 21 games, 1-4 against the spread in their last five road games, and 0-5 against the spread on fieldturf. Dallas is 10-25-1 against the spread in their last 36 home games, 7-19-1 against the spread on fieldturf, and 0-3-1 against the spread in their last four games. The road team has covered the point spread in the last four meetings of these two.
I am expecting to see a lot more of the first and second team offenses here and I expect both of these teams to continue to put points on the board so with the total set at 40.5 I like the over here.
