The Carolina Panthers and the Arizona Cardinals face off on Sunday in week 8 NFL football action.
The Carolina Panthers are coming off of a bye week but they are 1-5 and it is going to take a huge run for them to be in position to return to the Super Bowl. The Panthers offense is averaging 26.8 points and 394.3 yards per game but their minus 8 turnover ratio is what has crippled them. Carolina QB Cam Newton has been hit hard and often and he has completed 57.8 percent of his passes with 8 touchdowns and 6 interceptions and he has rushed for 3 touchdowns. The entire Panthers backfield has been banged up but Jonathan Stewart has rushed for 158 yards and 3 touchdowns and Fozzy Whittaker has rushed for 185 yards while Greg Olsen has caught 39 passes with 2 touchdowns and Kelvin Benjamin has 29 catches and 4 touchdowns. The Carolina defense is allowing 29.3 points and 371.5 yards per game with 6 interceptions, 4 fumble recoveries, and 12 sacks. Luke Keuchly is the leader of the Panthers defense with 68 tackles, Thomas Davis has 32 tackles, and Kurt Coleman has 31 tackles. The Panthers needed their bye week to heal the injuries and this could be the best version of them we have seen this year.
The Arizona Cardinals are 3-3-1 this season and they are coming off of a hard fought tie with the Seattle Seahawks in a game they clearly outplayed their opponent. The Cardinals offense is averaging 22.7 points and 379.3 yards per game and that have a plus 4 turnover ratio. Arizona QB Carson Palmer has completed 60.2 percent of his passes with 7 touchdowns and 5 interceptions and he has been sacked 16 times. David Johnson is the Cardinals leading rusher and he is having a big year rushing for 681 yards and 8 touchdowns and he has 28 catches while Larry Fitzgerald has 48 catches and 5 touchdowns. The Cardinals defense is allowing 15.7 points and 289.6 yards per game with 9 interceptions, 10 fumble recoveries, and 20 sacks. Tony Jefferson and Deone Bucannon are the Cardinals leading tacklers with 52 tackles each while Markus Golden has 6 sacks and Chandler Jones has 5 sacks. The Cardinals will need to recover quickly from their physical battle last week as this game won’t be any softer.
Carolina is 7-2 against the spread in their last 9 home games, 1-4 against the spread against a team with a losing record, and 0-4 against the spread in their last 4 games. Arizona is 21-7 against the spread against a team with a losing record, 3-7 against the spread in their last 10 games, and 17-7 against the spread following a game that they didn’t cover the spread. The home team has covered the point spread in the last five meetings of these two teams.
This should be a tight game but the Cardinals should be in rough shape and being on the road against a rested team just looks like a terrible spot for them. The Panthers haven’t looked like themselves this season but with the rest they should be much improved.
