NFL Mock Draft 2017: New York Jets Will Select Deshaun Watson

New York Jets Should Draft Deshaun Watson

April 3, 2017

The Line: -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds

The New York Jets have won eight or less games in five of their last six seasons, and a lot of that has to do with horrible quarterback play. Things haven’t changed in the Big Apple. The Jets enter the 2017 season with a quarterback depth chart of Josh McCown, Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg. I guess the good news is that Geno Smith is gone.

It’s time to draft for the future and bring a guy in who can change the culture for the Jets offense.

NFL Mock Draft 2017: New York Jets Will Select Deshaun Watson

USA TODAY Sports

The New York Jets need to draft Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson.

Watson has the vision and athleticism to succeed at the next level, as he has a great feel in the pocket and can make plays with his legs when needed. Watson has above-average arm strength, has shown the ability to throw with touch and can make the throws when on the move. Watson also has a high football IQ and doesn’t force the ball much.

Watson centrality isn’t the perfect quarterback, (sloppy footwork at times and is on the small side at 6’2”) but there’s a lot to work with, and he’ll benefit being behind a veteran in McCown. After all, we’re talking about a guy who torched Alabama's elite defense back-to-back years.

But the No. 1 reason the Jets should take Watson is because of his attitude. Watson seems to play his best the bigger the game and when there’s more pressure. The kid drips confidence and has backed it up throughout his career that included a national title, two ACC titles and two Davey O'Brien Awards. Watson is a leader on and off the field, and the way he carries himself rubs off on his team.

Not only is it hard to find a quarterback, but it’s even harder to find a QB who can thrive in a media frenzy like New York. The fans let you know how they feel, the media isn’t afraid to ask the tough questions and the pressure of New York is like none other. It’s easy to get chewed up and spit out if you're not built for everything that comes with the big city.

Watson carries himself with a confidence level to where that won't bother him and it’ll be easier for him to do his job to the best of his ability. The fans will learn to appreciate Watson and it could become a match made in heaven. Remember, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said NFL teams that pass on Watson are passing on Michael Jordan. While I’m not ready to go tat fair, I am willing to say this kid has great potential and will work his behind off to be successful.

The Jets have made a lot of safe picks over the years and haven’t drafted a quarterback in the first round since their 2009 selection of Mark Sanchez. It’s time they swing for the fences a bit and finally land a QB who can be a difference maker.

Watson can be that guy for the New York Jets.
