Over at LA Memorial Coliseum on Saturday, the Dallas Cowboys and the Los Angeles Rams will be meeting up in Week 1 NFL preseason action.
The Cowboys are coming off a really nice regular season, finishing 13-3 and with first place in the NFC East and the top seed in the conference. Dallas’ Super Bowl run was thwarted in the Divisional Round of the playoffs, however, as they fell to the Packers 34-31.

Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett returns for his seventh full year in 2017, and his first without Tony Romo on the roster (retired). Garrett and the Cowboys made a few changes in the offseason, adding notable players CB Nolan Carroll, RB Darren McFadden and RB Ronnie Hillman. Dallas lost a few guys in addition to Romo, though, including QB Mark Sanchez, RB Lance Dunbar, OT Doug Free (retired), CB Brandon Carr and FS JJ Wilcox.
Cowboys QB Dak Prescott had a breakout year in 2016, and he’ll be helming the offense once agin. Prescott is joined by star RB Ezekiel Elliott, who also had a big year last season, and WR targets Dez Bryant and Terrance Williams.
Over on the Rams’ side, they posted another dismal season in their first year in LA during 2016. The Rams finished 4-12, giving them third place in the NFC West. Head coach Jeff Fisher was fired in December after five years in charge.
Los Angeles gets a new head coach this year in Sean McVay, and he’ll preside over a team that lost C Tim Barnes, WR Kenny Britt and S TJ McDonald in free agency. New faces on the Rams’ roster include DE Connor Barwin, RB Lance Dunbar and C John Sullivan, in addition to second-round draft pick TE Gerald Everett.
At quarterback in 2017, Jared Goff will be taking the first-team snaps, with Todd Gurley and Lance Dunbar heading up RB duties. Tavon Austin and Robert Woods are the top WRs, while Tyler Higbee will slot in at TE until Everett is ready to take on a larger role.
Both teams come into preseason Week 1 relatively healthy, but both have a few guys to keep an eye on. The Cowboys’ Arjen Colquhoun will be out, while Ryan Switzer, Charles Tapper and Chaz Green are a few of the questionable designations. As for the Rams, They’ll be without WR Stedman Bailey, RB Lance Dunbar (PUP list) and DT Aaron Donald, while WR Tavon Austin, LB Robert Quinn and T Darrell Williams are questionable.
The Cowboys are 19-7 ATS in their last 26 games on grass, and 1-6 ATS in their last seven games overall. Dallas is also 1-6 ATS in their last seven versus the NFC and the under is 14-3 in the Cowboys’ last 17 road games.
Meanwhile, the Rams are 1-10-1 ATS in their last 12 games overall, and 0-4 ATS in their last four Saturday games. LA is also 0-6-1 ATS in their last seven home games and 0-7-1 ATS in their last eight versus the NFC.
This particular matchup depicts two teams on opposite ends of the NFL spectrum. LA seems destined to be looking forward to the 2018 draft all year, while Dallas comes in as NFC favorites to take the conference. Dallas outclasses the Rams in nearly every facet, and that includes roster depth. With the experience of Kellen Moore and Lance McCown backing up Prescott I don’t see a whole lot of ways that Los Angeles can keep up. I’ll take Dallas for a fairly easy win and cover here.
