The Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins meet Thursday in NFL preseason action at Hard Rock Stadium.
The Baltimore Ravens are coming off a 23-3 win over the Washington Redskins in which most of their starters didn’t play. With Joe Flacco sitting, Josh Woodrum completed all four of his passes for 85 yards and a touchdown, while Ryan Mallett completed nine of 18 passes for 58 yards. Rookie running back Taquan Mizzell led the way with 51 yards on 15 carries, and C.J. Board and Tim White combined for two receptions, 69 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, Brent Urban led the Ravens with four tackles, Anthony Levine Sr. had one sack and Bronson Kaufusi had one tackle for loss. The Baltimore Ravens produced 19 first downs on offense and the defense had seven tackles for loss. Overall, a really solid showing for the Ravens when you consider starters didn’t play for what it’s worth.
The Miami Dolphins produced a 23-20 victory over the Atlanta Falcons in which they scored 13 fourth quarter points. Backup quarterbacks David Fales and Brandon Doughty combined for 253 passing yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. Kenyan Drake led the Dolphins with 21 yards on four carries, while rookie Damore'ea Stringfellow stole the show with 116 yards and a touchdown on two receptions. Defensively, Cordrea Tankersley led Miami with six tackles, Cameron Malveaux had one sack and Deon Lacey had one tackle for loss. The Miami Dolphins expect to play Jay Cutler in this contest and he should see a lot of reps considering he’s expected to be the starter this season. However, the Phins have to be careful considering their training camp has been downright brutal with injuries.
The Ravens are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games on grass, 5-2 ATS in their last 7 vs. AFC and 1-6 ATS in their last 7 road games. The Dolphins are 6-13 ATS in their last 19 home games and 9-20 ATS in their last 29 vs. AFC. The Ravens are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 meetings in Miami, 7-0 ATS in their last 7 meetings and the under is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings in Miami.
I like quarterback depth and stability in my preseason games. Cutler is likely going to play quite a bit in this game considering he needs game reps to get ready for the regular season. Doughty, Fales and Matt Moore have all shown the ability to play well, especially against backup defenders. With Flacco still out, I'm not sure the Ravens backup quarterbacks can put together another solid performance and match Miami's options. I like the Dolphins to get another preseason victory.
