The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Jacksonville Jaguars meet Thursday in NFL preseason action at EverBank Field.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost to the Cincinnati Bengals, 23-12, in their preseason opener after being outscored 17-3 in the second half. Jameis Winston looked sharp with nine completions on 13 attempts and wide receiver Mike Evans had four receptions for 58 yards. The Buccaneers offensive starters are fine, it’s just a question of their depth and can they do enough to keep preseason bettors in games. One thing I do know for sure is that Ryan Fitzpatrick is in danger of losing his backup role if he continues to struggle with his accuracy and his interception rate. Defensively, Ryan Smith led Tampa Bay with five tackles, Kendell Beckwith had one sack and Robert McClain had one tackle for loss. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are fine on paper and will be even better when running back Doug Martin and cornerback Brent Grimes return to the field.
The Jacksonville Jaguars are coming off a 31-24 victory over the New England Patriots in which Chad Henne and Brandon Allen combined for more than 200 passing yards and two touchdowns. Blake Bortles had just five pass attempts, while running back Corey Grant stole the show with 120 rushing yards and one touchdown on just eight carries. Leonard Fournette didn’t exactly impress with nine reps, 31 yards and a touchdown, but he’s still going to be the starter for Jacksonville and should only get better with more playing time. Defensively, Blair Brown led the Jags with eight tackles, Lerentee McCray had one sack and Myles Jack had one tackle for loss. The Jacksonville Jaguars have to be pleased with what they showed in their first exhibition game.
The Buccaneers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 road games, 0-4 ATS in their last 4 Thursday games and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games overall. The Jaguars are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games on grass and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games. The underdog is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 meetings and the over is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings.
We have one team that looked hungry and played well with its backups in the preseason against one that didn't and couldn't score. The Jacksonville Jaguars have a lot of young players fighting for playing time and those are the type of teams that usually win and cover games in the preseason. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are still dealing with injuries and pretty much are what they are in terms of where they fit heading into the regular season. I like the Jags and the small line here.
