The New York Jets and Detroit Lions meet Saturday in NFL preseason action at Ford Field.
The New York Jets are coming off a 7-3 preseason victory over the Tennessee Titans. While Josh McCown produced the only touchdown of the game with a pass to Charone Peake, it was Christian Hackenberg who led the way with 18 completions on 25 attempts for 127 yards. Other than that, Robby Anderson’s big reception for 53 yards was the only other offensive thing worth mentioning for the Jets in a game that resembled what their regular season is likely going to look like. Preseason or not, just 3.7 yards per play and 251 total yards of offense isn’t going to get it done. Defensively, Jordan Jenkins led the Jets with four tackles, Josh Martin had one sack and Spencer Paysinger had one tackle for loss. The New York Jets have to find some positives on the offensive end to have any hope of this being a decent season.
The Detroit Lions are coming off a 24-10 victory over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday in which the defense allowed just three points in the first three quarters. Matthew Stafford had just three pass attempts in the victory that included an interception, while Jake Rudock stole the show with 13 completions on 21 attempts with 142 yards and two touchdowns. Miami rookie Brad Kaaya also held his own with eight completions on 11 attempts. The rest of the offensive stars included Dwayne Washington, who had 34 rushing yards on six attempts, while Kenny Golladay had two touchdowns on three receptions. Defensively, Jeremiah Valoaga led the Lions with six tackles, Alex Barrett had one sack and Paul Worrilow had one tackle for loss. The Detroit Lions had one of the most impressive preseason showings in week 1, especially when you add the fact the defense had five sacks and six tackles for loss.
The Jets are 0-3-1 ATS in their last 4 Saturday games and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 road games. The Lions are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 home games, 2-5 ATS in their last 7 Saturday games and 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The under is 9-2 in Lions last 11 games overall and the under is 5-2 in Jets last 7 games overall.
No team had a better preseason showing than the Detroit Lions did in week 1, and while that doesn't mean much when considering backups are playing the bulk of these games, it says a lot more than what the Jets did. We knew the New York Jets were going to be bad, but I'm not sure anybody expected that bad. The Jets had little positives coming out of their preseason opener, and with the way the Lions pressured the QB, this game could be just as ugly. Not to mention all of the Lions quarterbacks played well. I'll eat the chalk here, as I just can't back the Jets and their brutal play.
