The New Orleans Saints and Los Angeles Chargers meet Sunday in NFL preseason action at StubHub Center.

The New Orleans Saints are coming off a 20-14 loss to the Cleveland Browns, a game in which Drew Brees and others didn’t play. Garrett Grayson and Ryan Nassib combined for 236 yards and one touchdown on 30 pass attempts, but they were sacked a combined five times. The Saints have to be better on the offensive line if this is going to be a successful season. Other offensive standouts for the Saints was Tommylee Lewis, who had 124 yards and one touchdown on 10 receptions while Alvin Kamara had 35 yards on four carries. Defensively, P.J. Williams led the Saints with six tackles, Stephone Anthony had one sack and Rafael Bush had one tackle for loss. The New Orleans Saints have to find an identity before the season starts, but of course, things change a bit once Brees takeovers the offense, as he can mask a whole bunch of weaknesses with his play.

The Los Angeles Chargers are coming off a 48-17 beatdown from the Seattle Seahawks in which they allowed 34 first half points. Philip Rivers completed five of six passes for one touchdown, while Kellen Clemens and Mike Bercovici were a combined 8 of 16 for 168 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Travis Benjamin showed his big play ability at wide receiver and quarterback Cardale Jones had 18 rushing yards on two carries. The Chargers starters looked good in limited time, but those backups were probably the worst of any team in week one of the preseason. Defensively, Nigel Harris led the Chargers with nine tackles, Tenny Palepoi had one sack and Melvin Ingram had one tackle for loss. The Los Angeles Chargers, however, lost two key linebackers in injuries to Denzel Perryman and Jerry Attaochu, something this team can’t afford if they’re going to have a successful season.

The Saints are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 road games, 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games on grass and 10-3 ATS in their last 13 games overall. The Chargers are 5-16 ATS in their last 21 home games, 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games on grass and 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Saints are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings and the over is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings.

I don't like either of these teams backup quarterback situations, making this game tough to cap for me. I'm also scared to take the Chargers after that defense got blasted by the Seahawks in the first half. However, these guys do have pride, and I'm sure the Chargers are eager for a bounce back performance after getting chewed up and spit out. The Saints live and die with Drew Brees, and he's not going to play a lot here. I'll take the Chargers and lay the field goal here based on the motivation factor.
