The Houston Texans and New Orleans Saints meet Saturday in NFL preseason action at Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
The Houston Texans are 1-1 in preseason play and are coming off a 27-23 win over the New England Patriots. Tom Savage hopes he pulled away in the quarterback competition by completing eight of nine passes for 98 yards and one touchdown. Rookie Deshaun Watson threw for 102 yards and rushed for a touchdown, but he completed just three of 10 passes. Watson has shown playmaking ability, but he has to be more accurate with the football. Alfred Blue led Houston with 20 yards on five carries while Bruce Ellington and D'Onta Foreman combined for 159 receiving yards on six receptions. Defensively, Dylan Cole led the Texans with 10 tackles, Ufomba Kamalu had one sack and Daniel Ross had one tackle for loss. The Houston Texans know what they have as a team overall, but this should be the game where they can make a decision on who will be the starting quarterback.
The New Orleans Saints are 1-1 in preseason action and are coming off a 13-7 win over the San Diego Chargers. Drew Brees has yet to play in the preseason, but he should see the bulk of the reps in this contest to get ready for regular season play. In the win over the Chargers, Chase Daniel completed seven of 12 passes for 80 yards while Ryan Nassib had 55 passing yards and an interception. Alvin Kamara led the Saints with 61 yards and a touchdown on five carries while Michael Thomas and Trey Edmunds combined for 50 receiving yards on two receptions. Defensively, Manti Te'o led the Saints with nine tackles, Craig Robertson had one sack and Kenny Vaccaro had one tackle for loss. The New Orleans Saints have had brutal defenses over the years, so the fact they’ve allowed a combined 27 points in two preseason games has to be encouraging. Sure, preseason is preseason, but the Saints will take what they can get at this point.
The Texans are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Saints are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 Saturday games, 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games on fieldturf and 10-3 ATS in their last 13 games overall. The home team is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 meetings and the favorite is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 meetings.
The New Orleans Saints defense has been quite a surprise, as this is a unit that's been getting lit up left and right over the years. If Brees and the rest of the offensive starters actually play, this is a game they can win on their home field. The Texans have given up big quarters in their first two games and are still figuring things out at QB. We're also getting the Saints at a cheaper price considering this line opened up at -3 in the Saints favor. I'll take the Saints at home with the low line.
