On Thursday, August 31 from Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, the New York Giants and the New England Patriots will be finishing up their NFL preseasons with a Week 4 matchup.

The Giants are 1-2 in preseason activity thus far following a 20-12 loss to the Steelers, a 10-6 loss to the Browns and a 32-31 win over the Jets. In that one, QB Eli Manning finished 7-for-14 for 121 yards and a pick, and the defense scored three times.

New England Patriots vs. New York Giants - 8/31/17 NFL Pick, Odds, and Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

The Giants are coming off a 2016 in which they finished 11-5 and in second place in the NFC East. New York made the playoffs but lost to the Packers in the Wild Card game. The Giants have a few new faces helping them on the way to another playoff berth this year, including WR Brandon Marshall, QB Geno Smith and RB Shaun Draughn.

Over on the Patriots side, they’re entering play here with a 1-2 record in the preseason so far. New England lost to the Jaguars 31-24 in Week 1 then the Texans 27-23 in Week 2. The Pats bagged a win in their last outing in Detroit, with QB Tom Brady finishing 12-for-15 for 174 yards, two TDs and an interception.

New England is trying to repeat as Super Bowl champions this season following a 14-2 campaign and victories over the Texans, Steelers and Falcons in the playoffs last year. New England retools with a few new names including TE Rob Housler, CB Stephon Gilmore, LB David Harris and RB Mike Gillislee.

The Giants have a few injury issues to keep track of this week, notably Eli Apple (ankle), Brandon Marshall (shoulder) and Odell Beckham (ankle). As for the Pats, their big loss this week was WR Julian Edelman, who will be out for the season following an ACL tear.

The Giants are 6-1 ATS in their last seven games on field turf and 4-1 ATS in their last five Thursday games. The over is 4-0 in the Giants’ last four Thursday games and the under is 7-2 in the Giants’ last nine games overall.

Meanwhile, the Patriots are 6-0 ATS in their last six games on field turf and 18-6-2 ATS in their last 26 home games. New England is also 34-16-2 ATS in their last 52 games overall and the over is 4-0 in the Pats’ last four games overall.

With this being a Week 4 preseason game, it won’t be anything like these two teams meeting in the Super Bowl, so don’t expect a whole lot of fireworks here. We’ll see very little of the starters, and the third- and fourth-string guys will do the bulk of the work. This is something of a coin flip because of that, but with New England’s disregard for preseason outcomes, I like the Giants here for the victory.
