The New York Jets and the Buffalo Bills open up their respective 2017 NFL regular season schedules with an AFC East division showdown in week one.
The New York Jets will look to get off to a strong start after finishing the preseason at 2-2 with a 16-10 win over the Eagles in their preseason finale. Christian Hackenburg saw the bulk of the workload, going 10 of 22 for 105 yards and a touchdown, while Josh McCown, who was announced as the team’s starting QB for week one, avoided an injury scare while throwing for 57 yards on 6 of 8 passing. Elijah McGuire led the team with 56 yards on the ground while Austin Seferian-Jenkins hauled in two passes for 32 yards and a touchdown. Romar Morris led the team with 3 receptions out of the backfield. Defensively, the Jets combined for 3.5 sacks, with Kony Ealy making the biggest impact for his new team, forcing a fumble as well while Derrick Jones led the team with 5 tackles and an interception.
The Buffalo Bills will hope to gain some momentum after notching their first win of the preseason in week four, a 27-17 win over Detroit. Nathan Peterman continued to make his case for the backup QB job, going 9 of 11 for a team-high 81 passing yards. The Bills ran a ground game clinic in the win, with Joe Banyard leading the team with 68 yards on 14 carries with a touchdown. Jonathan Williams racked up 53 yards and a score on his 10 carries while Jordan Johnson also ran one in while putting up 35 yards on 12 carries. Taiwan Jones made the best use of his touches, taking 5 carries and turning them into 48 yards as the Bills combined for 205 yards rushing on 45 carries. Only six Bills’ receivers caught a pass in the win, with Logan Thomas leading the team with 4 receptions for 30 yards. The defensive game ball had to go to Ian Seau who logged a pair of sacks and a forced fumble which he also recovered. Greg Mabin logged an interception while Joe Powell recovered a fumble forced by Trae Elston. Notable for the Bills here is the status of starting QB Tyrod Taylor, who is questionable after suffering a concussion in week three of the preseason.
The Jets are 3-7-1 ATS in their last 11 games in September and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 road games while the under is 8-3 in their last 11 road games. Buffalo is 9-3 ATS in their last 12 week 1 matchups and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 division matchups while the over is 8-0 in their last 8 home games. The Jets are 1-4 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams in Buffalo.
I’m going into this season as I went into the preseason, with the expectation that the Jets are going to be one of the worst teams in the league this season. Even with the addition of Kony Ealy on defense, I can’t see the Jets doing enough offensively to hang with Buffalo here. The Jets haven’t had much success in Buffalo either, so even with the status of Tyrod Taylor up in the air, I’ll lay the touchdown with the Bills.
