The Indianapolis Colts and Los Angeles Rams open up the 2017-18 NFL season Sunday at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

The Indianapolis Colts have won eight games each of the last two seasons and haven’t missed the playoffs three straight years since 1992-94. Offensively, the Colts are pretty much the same team they were a year ago, but it’s hard seeing them do much until Andrew Luck returns from injury. Luck didn’t play in the preseason and the timetable for a return remains in question. That means Scott Tolzien will be the starting QB for the Colts, and he’ll likely rely heavily on running backs Frank Gore and Robert Turbin to open things up. Defensively, the Colts have a ton of new faces that includes Johnathan Hankins, Jonathan Bostic and Margus Hunt. There’s also concerns with cornerback and best Colts defender Vontae Davis, who is probably out of this game due to a groin injury. Just not a good offseason overall for the Colts. The Indianapolis Colts have won four of their last five regular season road games.

The Los Angeles Rams have nowhere to go but up after winning four games in their debut season in LA, and they have a new head coach in Redskins offensive coordinator Sean McVay. The Rams offense will be more than Todd Gurley this season thanks to the additions of Robert Woods and Sammy Watkins, but none of that matters much if Jared Goff doesn’t improve at quarterback in his second season. Goff completed just 54.6 percent of his passes and had seven interceptions on 112 pass attempts, numbers that aren’t going to get it done. There’s also no options behind Goff with Dan Orlovsky being the backup who hasn’t started since the 2011 season. Defensively, the Rams were ninth in the league last season in total yards allowed, and they should be a respectable unit yet again with All-Pro players in Arnold Donald and Alec Ogletree setting the tone. However, it’s going to be tough for the Rams to win games in the NFC if they don’t have a quarterback to make plays. The Los Angeles Rams have lost seven straight regular season home games.

The Colts are 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 road games, 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games in September and 1-8 ATS in their last 9 games in Week 1. The Rams are 0-6-1 ATS in their last 7 home games, 15-35-1 ATS in their last 51 games in September and 1-10-1 ATS in their last 12 games overall. The favorite is 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings and the over is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings.

I don't think highly of the Indianapolis Colts with Luck. Now that he's not on the field, I'm not sure the Colts deserve to be a favorite against anybody in the league. There's also issues with a Colts defense that doesn't have Davis at cornerback. Sure, the Rams were awful last season, but they are at home, are solid defensively and did get better on offense with Watkins being added to the mix. Considering the Colts have a backup QB, I think we're getting the better team with free points. I don't bet against that often. Give me my free field goal.
