Out at Gillette Stadium on Sunday, the Carolina Panthers and the New England Patriots will be locking horns in Week 4 NFL action.
The Panthers are coming into this game with a 2-1 record following two wins over the 49ers and Bills, then a 34-13 loss to the Saints in their last appearance. In that New Orleans game, Carolina QB Cam Newton went 17-of-26 for 167 yards and three picks, while Jonathan Stewart could only put up 12 carries for 57 yards. Christian McCaffrey was the leading Panthers receiver with nine catches for 101 yards.

Through three games so far, Newton has 566 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions, while Stewart leads the rushers in Carolina on 45 attempts and 162 yards. McCaffrey is tops on the Panthers with 23 targets, 18 receptions and 173 yards.
Over on the Patriots’ side, they’re sitting at 2-1 this year as well. New England lost the opener against the pesky Chiefs, then got wins over New Orleans 36-20 and Houston 36-33. In that Texans game, Patriots QB Tom Brady went off for 378 yards and five touchdowns, with Brandin Cooks taking most of the work on five catches for 131 yards and two scores.
So far this season, Brady has 1092 yards and eight touchdowns, while Mike Gillislee is the Pats’ top rusher on 145 yards, four scores and 45 attempts. Cooks is New England’s leading receiver with 256 yards, two touchdowns and 10 receptions on 18 targets.
The Panthers are 4-1 ATS in their last five games following an ATS loss, and 4-1-1 ATS in their last six road games. Carolina is also 5-2 ATS in their last seven games in Week 4 and 0-6 ATS in their last six games on fieldturf.
Meanwhile, the Patriots are 6-0 ATS versus a team with a winning record and 8-1 ATS in their last nine games following a striaght-up win. New England is also 7-2 ATS in their last nine games in Week 4 and 40-16-3 ATS in their last 59 games in October.
The Patriots continue playing with fire, but for the most part this year they’re emerging unscathed. That said, New England does have some problems on defense, giving up a total of 95 points in three games. As for the Panthers, they’re not as good as their 2-1 record indicates, barely escaping a bad Buffalo team and taking care of business against the tepid 49ers. That said, with the line being rather thick here, I like the Panthers to eke into a cover.
