The Line: Detroit Lions -2.5 -- Over/Under: 43.5 See the Latest Odds

The Carolina Panthers look for a statement win on the road as they head into Ford Field to do battle with the Detroit Lions.

The Panthers have been up and down to start the season but have a very good chance at extending their winning streak this weekend against the Lions after taking down the Patriots a week ago. Carolina has game breakers on both sides of the ball but they have just as many holes and if they can patch some of them they should very well be in the running with the Falcons, Saints, and Bucs in the NFC South and at the very least in the conversation as a wild card game. Cam Newton appears to be back to his old form despite lacking some social constructs in press conferences and his weapons are plentiful despite a slow start to the season from rookie back Christian McCaffery. However, the Panthers defense is the unit we should focus on this weekend as they take on a Lions side that has been very good to start the year and at home should have some added energy thanks to the Motor City faithful.

The Lions head into this weekend’s game with an impressive 3-1 record and with a victory here they will jump into the discussion an NFC contender if we haven’t already seen it through four weeks. Detroit will live and die by the play of Matt Stafford and as the league’s highest paid player it makes sense as such as he is an extraordinary talent and has led the Lions to a handful of heart stopping, cone from behind victories over the years. The Lions defense is also looking much better thanks to guys like Jarrad Davis and Darius Slay and if they can reach the same level as the offense they are going to be a very tough team to stop in the NFC.

The Panthers are 4-0 ATS in their last four road games and 2-5 ATS in their last seven week five games while the Lions are 4-1 ATS in their last five in October and 1-5 ATS in their last six against a team with a winning record. Carolina looked great against the Patriots last weekend and they should have enough in the tank to keep this one close but in the end the Lions have a knack for these big games lately and I think they can earn a late cover.
