We have a big time NFC South showdown on tap Sunday afternoon, as the Atlanta Falcons duke it out against the New Orleans Saints in week 16 NFL action.
The Atlanta Falcons will look to make week 17 especially interesting, sitting at 9-5 this season, one game back of the division-leading Saints after a 24-21 victory over Tampa Bay in week 15’s edition of Monday Night Football. Matt Ryan threw for 212 yards and a touchdown on 17 of 31 passing, while Devonta Freeman led the team in rushing with 22 carries for 126 yards and a touchdown. Freeman also led the team in receiving with 5 catches for 68 yards, while Julio Jones added 3 catches for 54 yards, and Justin Hardy added 33 receiving yards and a touchdown. On defense, the Falcons combined for a sack and a pair of forced fumbles, one of which was recovered, all while giving up 373 yards of total offense to the Bucs in the win.
The New Orleans Saints will look for a big time win to potentially lock up the NFC South division title after climbing to 10-4 with a 31-19 victory over the New York Jets last time out. Drew Brees threw for 281 yards, 2 touchdowns and an interception on 26 of 36 passing, while Mark Ingram led the Saints on the ground with 12 carries for 74 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Alvin Kamara added 44 rushing yards while Michael Thomas added a team-high 9 receptions for 93 yards and a touchdown while Ingram added 5 catches for 77 yards and Kamara caught 6 balls for 45 yards and a touchdown of his own. The Saints defense combined for a sack and a pair of interceptions while holding the Jets to 294 yards of total offense and a 5 for 15 mark on 3rd down in the winning effort.
Atlanta is 6-2 ATS in their last 8 road games against a team with a winning home record and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games while the under is 8-3 in their last 11 games overall. New Orleans is 22-4 ATS in their last 26 home games against a team with a winning road record and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 division matchups while the under is 5-2 in their last 7 games following a win. The underdog is 7-1 ATS in the last 8 meetings between these two teams.
The underdog may have had the bulk of the success ATS when these two teams meet, but even though they gave up 19 to the lowly Jets, I still think the Saints are the team to beat in that division. The Saints have also had no problems shutting down teams who have had success on the road that come into their building, and I think we see more of the same in this one as New Orleans wins by a touchdown here.
